About the role
Working as part of a healthcare team, the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides quality nursing care to residents and assists with their activities of daily living. The CNA needs to anticipate all of the residents' needs to provide a safe environment that allows them to live as normal a life as possible, maintaining their dignity, respect, and rights.
Responsibilities
- Provide quality nursing care to residents in an environment which promotes their rights, dignity, freedom of choice, and individuality:
- Knowledgeable of the individualized care plan for residents and provide support according to the care plan.
- Take vital signs and document accurately; report any signs of unusual behaviors or medical conditions promptly.
- Administer required treatments as assigned and document accurately.
- Attend to activities of daily living, including grooming, bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, incontinent care, toileting, colostomy care, prosthetic appliances, transferring, ambulation, range of motion, and communicating.
- Allow residents to do what they can for themselves; ensure residents appear neat, clean, and well-kept at all times.
- Document unusual findings (e.g., behaviors, skin abnormalities).
- Maintain a safe, neat, and clean environment; report environmental deficiencies such as lighting or equipment problems.
- Observe residents for changes in condition or behavior and report immediately to supervisor.
- Answer residents' call bells promptly and courteously, maintaining comfort, privacy, and dignity.
- Lift, move, and transport residents using proper body mechanics or lifting devices for accident prevention.
- Communicate and interact professionally and tactfully with residents, visitors, families, peers, and supervisors.
- Complete CNA records documenting care provided or other information per facility policies.
- Know and practice safety policies and infection control procedures, including hand washing, use of disposable gloves, and proper disposal of soiled materials.
- Other duties:
- Assist and escort residents for appointments and activities as required.
- Assist with meals and reinforce good eating and cleansing habits; supervise dining room during meal times.
- Understand all aspects of residents' rights, including the use of restraints and freedom from abuse; report incidents of abuse, neglect, or misconduct.
- Maintain current CNA certification; participate in in-service and continuing education trainings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Basic everyday living skills, including the ability to read, write legibly, add, subtract, and spell correctly to follow directions and understand care plans.
- Effective verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with basic equipment: EZ stand, EZ lift, gait belt, walker, wheelchair, sensor pad alarms, clip alarms, anti-rollback devices, seatbelts (alarmed or unalarmed), low beds, personal care items, mats, scales, blood pressure cuff, thermometer, telephone, and stethoscope.
