About the role
We serve the health care needs of the people of Memphis and the Mid-South. This role involves providing care in a medical practice office or clinic under the direction of a provider. Duties include assisting patients, performing clerical tasks, collecting and recording patient data, and administering medications.
Responsibilities
- Proactively assists patients throughout the visit as needed
- Accompanies patients to the exam/procedure room
- Responds to patient needs in a professional and friendly manner
- Performs clerical activities related to patient care such as scheduling appointments and diagnostic imaging exams
- Collects and records patient data including height, weight, temperature, pulse, respiration rate and blood pressure
- May assist with physical examinations and performs EKGs, removing sutures/staples, and changing sterile and non-sterile dressings
- Effectively collects and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis utilizing non-invasive techniques
- Assists with undressing, cleansing, and positioning patients for specific procedures
- Performs skin tests and venipuncture of skin for purpose of withdrawing blood
- Affixes and administers medication and immunizations under the direction of the physician or advanced practice provider
- Authorizes prescription refills and provides prescription information to pharmacies ordered and authorized by a physician or advanced practice provider
- Administers first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an emergency
- Prepares and cleans exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control
- Ensures instruments are cleaned and sterilized and contaminated supplies are properly disposed
- Prepares orders, sorts, stores, and restocks supplies for exam/procedure room
- Provides patient education and instructions under the authorization of the supervising physician
- Performs other duties as assigned or requested
Requirements
Required - High School Diploma or Equivalent
Required - Medical Assistant or similar 3-5 years work experience
Required - HEARTSAVER - American Heart Association
Required - NCCT Medical Assistant - National Center for Competency Testing
Required - Basic Life Support - American Heart Association
Required - Demonstrated proficiency in motivational interviewing and teach back method techniques
Required - Ability to act quickly in emergency situations
Qualifications
Preferred - AMT Registered Medical Assistant - American Medical Technologists
Preferred - Certified Clinical Medical Assistant - National Healthcareer Association
Preferred - Nationally Certified Medical Assistant - National Association of Health Professionals
Preferred - AAMA Certified Medical Assistant - The American Association of Medical Assistants
Skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Good balance and coordination
- Close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision
- Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact
- Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials
