Registered professional nurse responsible for direct and indirect patient care, shift leadership, and department operations.
Responsibilities
- Formulate and execute a care plan with oncoming staff leader.
- Oversee daily unit operations, including quality, safety, service excellence, staff development, finance, and growth initiatives.
- Maintain continuous updates to the Visual Management Board.
- Ensure bedside reporting occurs daily and HCAHPS initiatives are implemented.
- Execute and ensure adherence to appropriate bundles for CLABSI, CAUTI, and other safety protocols.
- Enforce hand hygiene practices ("wash in and wash out") and bare-below-the-elbows policy in clinical areas.
- Participate in and lead committees and quality initiatives.
- Maintain unit compliance with established standards, guidelines, and TJC regulations; escalate issues promptly.
- Enforce hourly rounding and bedside shift report.
- De-escalate situations and implement service recovery.
- Track and meet unit-specific metrics and goals.
- Assist in recruitment, retention, and onboarding of staff.
- Identify and develop Clinical Staff Leaders; facilitate their growth.
- Communicate effectively with ancillary departments, medical staff, and leadership; propose solutions for concerns.
- Delegate tasks based on staff skill levels.
- Coach and counsel staff to enhance performance; conduct collaborative performance reviews.
- Collaborate with Director/Manager to facilitate monthly staff meetings.
- Facilitate orientation and education opportunities for new and existing staff; provide constructive feedback.
- Manage productivity by adjusting staffing based on census and acuity.
- Analyze staffing needs for the current shift and next 24 hours.
- Monitor supply costs to stay within budget; adhere to established PAR levels.
- Ensure timely patient placement according to department matrix.
- Complete Kronos and update daily schedules to reflect actual staffing.
- Monitor time and attendance; take corrective action for policy non-compliance.
- Communicate effectively with physicians and service lines.
- Assist with community outreach programs (e.g., health fairs, community events).
- Demonstrate mastery of patient care, including assessment, treatment, care planning, patient education, and evidence-based practice.
- Lead by example through professional work habits and positive relationships; embrace change.
- Maintain clinical competency, evaluated annually with a focus on population-specific needs.
Requirements
- Current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Tennessee (or multistate licensure from a compact state for non-Tennessee residents, obtained within three months of hire).
- BLS certification completed prior to unit assignment and maintained thereafter.
- ACLS certification within the first 3 months of hire.
- Unit-specific approved certification and any required certified training for the area of practice.
- Certification by specialty within 1 year of exam eligibility for the area of practice.
Qualifications
- Education: Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing (BSN preferred).
- Experience: Clinical experience required; evidence of leadership abilities required. Knowledge of nursing principles, organizational policies, current trends, and specialty-specific practices. Minimum of 2 years’ clinical experience preferred.
