Clinical Social Worker Supervisor

About the Role

This position works within the Citywide Stabilization Program, which includes the Stabilization Team, Assisted Outpatient Treatment Team (AOT), PES Linkage Team, and CARE Court Team (CARE). These programs provide intensive case management to adults with mental illness, substance use, houselessness, criminal-legal involvement, chronic medical conditions, and other vulnerabilities.

Under the supervision of the Director of Citywide Stabilization, the Clinical Social Work Supervisor provides clinical supervision and oversight of Clinical Social Worker I/II/III and Community Health Program staff within the Citywide Stabilization Programs, primarily for AOT, CARE, and Stabilization, covering other programs as needed. Responsibilities include recruiting, training, and evaluating staff, leading team meetings, presenting to community partners and at conferences, collecting data for audits, assisting with annual reports and program development, and participating in Citywide Leadership Team Meetings.

The Supervisor will also provide direct service delivery, including ongoing mental health services such as psychotherapy, assessment, crisis intervention, case management, and outreach to clients wherever they may reside. The program remains flexible to meet the needs of the community mental health system within DPH. As essential workers, employees will continue to support and provide direct service during natural disasters and/or pandemics, including possible deployment.

Department Overview

The Division of Citywide Case Management Programs at UCSF/ZSFG, Department of Psychiatry is located at 1263 Mission Street, San Francisco. The Division provides comprehensive outpatient treatment to individuals suffering from severe mental illness, often complicated by homelessness, chronic traumatization, institutionalization, substance use disorder, and chronic medical conditions.

The mission of the Division is to help clients recover prior functioning, reduce reliance on acute services, and facilitate transitions from ZSFG psychiatric inpatient units, jails, or other institutions to the community. Programs serve a diverse group of individuals in terms of social, cultural, and linguistic characteristics and are structured around interdisciplinary teams. Interventions include psychotherapy, crisis intervention, psychotropic medication management, case management, outreach, and employment services.

Responsibilities

• Provide clinical supervision and oversight of Clinical Social Worker I/II/III and Community Health Program staff, including training and ongoing oversight of billing, charting, and quality/efficacy of clinical services.
• Recruit, train, and evaluate staff, including initiating disciplinary proceedings as needed.
• Lead team meetings and present to community partners and at conferences.
• Collect data for audits and assist with annual reports and program development.
• Participate in Citywide Leadership Team Meetings and complete other activities as needed.
• Provide direct service delivery, including ongoing mental health services such as psychotherapy, assessment, crisis intervention, case management, and outreach to clients in various settings.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in social work, psychology, or related field from an accredited university.
• Five years of related work experience, including three in a lead/supervisory role or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Licensure as a LCSW or MFT from the Board of Behavioral Sciences Examiner.
• Two years of experience doing community-based case management and outreach to resident units.
• Two years of experience working with individuals actively involved in the civil courts system.
• Two years of experience working with severely mentally ill adults, the homeless, and dual-diagnosed populations.
• Three years of supervisory or leadership experience.
• Ability to ensure patient care service standards are consistently met and manage challenging patient interactions with sensitivity and skill.
• Ability to work with clients and program staff from diverse cultural and social class backgrounds.
• Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with others in a high-stress, high-volume area under pressure and deadlines.
• Strong interpersonal skills and experience working with populations diverse in gender, sexual orientation, and ethnicity.
• Knowledge of psychiatric service operations and ability to apply concepts in an acute care setting.

Preferred Qualifications

• Licensed for two years and able to sign hours for Associate Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapy Interns.
• Knowledge of medical center, HR, and UC policies and processes.
• Knowledge of relevant psychiatric health services internal policies and external regulations.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Placement within the salary range depends on work experience and internal equity. For positions represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
