Clinical Nurse Supervisor
About the Role
An integral part of the care leadership team, the Hospital Supervisor coordinates and delivers clinical services activities on their assigned shift. In the absence of department or facility leadership, the Supervisor ensures appropriate use of staff, staffing levels, immediate problem solving, management decision making, and maintaining a safe environment by adhering to safety regulations, policies, and procedures. Provides clinical support and leadership for high-risk patients or unusual situations. Accountable for patient census, observation status, and appropriate bed utilization. Communicates with patients, families, and the public to promote positive relations, diffuse problems, and address concerns. Collaborates with unit/department leaders to supervise and lead hospital staff, facilitating positive change, quality care, and efficient use of resources.
Hospital Supervisors are required to obtain their nursing administration or professional/specialty certification within 12 months of assuming the role, or within 12 months of achieving eligibility to sit for the exam if not eligible upon hire.
Responsibilities
- Coordinates the implementation of the overall plan for the utilization of resources and appropriate admissions/discharges/transfers to maximize available resources, continuity of care, and unit budgetary control.
- Communicates and collaborates with patients, families, staff, management, physicians, and departments regarding patient, staff, and quality care issues. Acts as a facilitator or active problem-solver in complex situations.
- Uses census and acuity programs to ensure adequate staffing levels across all units/departments; adjusts staffing following established procedures.
- Maintains fiscal responsibility in managing department needs and reports unusual occurrences to leadership, Risk Management, etc.
- Serves as an informational resource on Hospital policies, procedures, protocols, risk management, patient safety, advocacy, and management-related areas.
- Facilitates and supports the change process, ensuring key leadership is appropriately informed.
- Demonstrates critical thinking, problem resolution, and mentoring/education of staff.
- Provides supervision, direction, and support to all in-house staff to ensure effectiveness and efficiency of services.
- Communicates performance issues and concerns to unit/department leadership and follows through with in-the-moment opportunities for performance enhancement.
- Rounds throughout the facility to maintain awareness of organizational information, high-risk patients, and situations, serving as a clinical resource.
- Facilitates communication of concerns through the Help Chain of Command and follows up to ensure clinical concerns are addressed.
- Acts as a resource for staff to identify and address ethical issues, formulating decisions based on ethical principles and the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses.
- Advocates for privacy, confidentiality, and security of patient, staff, and organizational data.
- Activates contingency plans (e.g., Disaster, patient placement with census fluctuations) in collaboration with leadership and the Administrator on call.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) upon hire at Grand Rapids Hospitals.
- For those starting in this role on or before January 31, 2017, at United: BSN upon hire.
- For those starting on or after February 1, 2017, at Big Rapids, Gerber, Ludington, Pennock, Reed City, United, Zeeland: BSN must be obtained within 4 years.
- For those starting on or before January 31, 2017, at Big Rapids, Gerber, Ludington, Pennock, Reed City, Zeeland: BSN must be obtained within 5 years.
- Preferred: Master's Degree (MS, MSN, MBS, MM, MHA, MPH, or related field).
- 2 years of relevant nursing experience (required).
- 2 years of recent relevant leadership experience (e.g., Charge Nurse, Shared Leadership position, Magnet Champion, QSO) (required; based on entity).
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Michigan (required upon hire).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) (required within 90 days).
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification from AHA (required within 180 days, except at Niles and St. Joseph BirthPlace).
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification from AHA (required within 180 days at HDVCH, Big Rapids, Gerber Memorial, Ludington, Pennock, Reed City, United, Zeeland, St. Joseph, Niles, and Watervliet hospitals, except Niles and St. Joseph BirthPlace).
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification from AHA (required within 180 days at HDVCH, Big Rapids, Gerber Memorial, Ludington, Pennock, Reed City, United, Zeeland, St. Joseph, Niles, and Watervliet hospitals).
- Specialty Certification (required within 1 year at Grand Rapids Hospitals; see job summary for details).
- NIH Stroke Certification (NIHSS) (required within 90 days, except at Niles and St. Joseph BirthPlace).
