Clinical Laboratory Technician 1, HMC Phlebotomy & Specimen Processing Services Team

About the role

As a Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) 1 with the Phlebotomy & Specimen Processing Services (PSPS) Team at Harborview Medical Center, you will play a vital role in the diagnostic process of laboratory testing. Responsibilities include processing and preparing specimens for testing, performing blood draws on patients, and providing excellent customer service.

Responsibilities

• Specimen Processing Activities: Receive, sort, and prioritize specimens and requests; match specimens against requisitions for appropriate tube type; centrifuge and aliquot specimens; process timed urine collections; result and review entries for all reference lab testing; perform various computer functions.
• Phlebotomy Activities: Provide direct patient care by performing venipuncture and capillary blood collection on inpatients and outpatients of all ages.
• Customer Service: Respond promptly, courteously, and professionally to inquiries from patients, clients, and hospital and laboratory staff; instruct patients on proper collection of urine specimens.
• Knowledge Sharing: Orient and train new employees; participate in performance improvement activities; support the hospital in meeting JCAHO, CLIA, and CAP accreditation standards.
• Problem-Solving: Resolve specimen and order-related problems in a timely, thorough, and accurate manner; provide appropriate documentation for supervisor review.

Requirements

• High school graduation or equivalent AND one (1) year of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience OR
• Completion of a laboratory assistant course approved by the American Society for Clinical Pathology OR
• Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Additional Department Requirement: Medical Assistant – Phlebotomist (MA-P) certification with the Washington State Department of Health OR obtain the MA-P certification within 180 days of start date.

Desired Qualifications

• Associate or bachelor’s degree in science
• Experience in a major medical hospital laboratory
• Experience with a Laboratory Information System (LIS)

Pay

Hourly pay range: $26.88 – $38.46

Schedule

Full-time (100% FTE), permanent evening shift (Sunday–Thursday)
