Clinical Informatics Pharmacist
About the Role
Works in the build, implementation, troubleshooting, and support of automation and technology to optimize pharmacy practice, pharmacy systems, and the medication-use process. Specializes in the medication process from ordering to administration, responsible for effective process design, development, and implementation of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Clinical Decision Support. Supports pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and other clinicians as the resource for EMR and pharmacy system changes and additions. Provides EMR-related staff education and training. Assists in clinical systems implementation, problem identification, and resolution through coordination among physicians, clinical staff, and Information Technology to ensure pharmacy systems are interoperable and coordinated with core systems.
Responsibilities
- Build, implement, integrate, and maintain automation and technology to assure safe and appropriate use of medications.
- Ensure appropriate testing of all integrated applications.
- Evaluate and implement knowledge-based information, including scientific literature, prior to software changes.
- Develop, monitor, and evaluate decision support for continuous improvement, particularly for medications.
- Partner with clinicians to identify and facilitate advanced clinical decision support within the EMR to meet clinical goals.
- Participate in functional testing for human factors issues before and after system upgrades.
- Assist in order set management, including development and maintenance of principles for safe design, standards, patient safety, and evidence-based practice guidelines.
- Promote effective communication concerning medication-use applications and disseminate timely information related to pharmacy automation and technology.
- Participate in interdepartmental committees and contribute expertise on pharmacy automation and technology.
- Actively engage in the development, prioritization, and determination of core clinical decision-support systems.
- Ensure pharmacy systems comply with regulatory guidelines, including state and federal rules, The Joint Commission, and CMS standards.
- Support pharmacy residency research activities and provide drug utilization data analysis for medical staff and allied health professionals.
- Assist with internal audits, billing, financial analysis, and quality improvement projects.
- Participate in orientation, education, and mentoring of new staff.
- Design and implement quality improvement changes to the organization’s medication-use system.
- Oversee the work of Pyxis Specialists and Application Specialists III.
- Adhere to organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values, policies, and standards.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an AACP-accredited College of Pharmacy or Bachelor’s Degree from an AACP-accredited College of Pharmacy.
- Current Arizona Pharmacist license upon hire.
- Must obtain Epic certification in one or more relevant products or solutions within one year.
Qualifications
- Four years’ experience as a hospital pharmacist strongly preferred.
