Clinical Director- Emergency Services

About the Role

The Emergency Services Director is accountable for the 24-hour operations of the emergency department and related service areas. Responsibilities include clinical care delivery, leadership of associates, fiscal stewardship of department resources, and creating a positive clinical and work environment. The Director oversees major initiatives to achieve quality and service goals, collaborates with the medical staff ED Director, and contributes to the organization’s success in clinical outcomes, customer service, and financial performance. Models behavior aligned with MLH’s Mission, Vision, and Values.

Responsibilities

• Clinical Operations:
  • Accountable for Emergency Services and related departments 24/7.
  • Ensures effective patient care through staff associates.
  • Leads development and implementation of strategies for improved care and safety of ED patients.
  • Participates in developing and implementing improvement solutions for clinical care outcomes.
  • Collaborates with case managers and registration associates to ensure service to each patient.
  • Works with MD ED Director to review results and address care delivery effectiveness.
  • Participates in developing and implementing improvement solutions for customer satisfaction.
• Associate Management:
  • Hires, coaches, develops, and evaluates associate performance.
  • Works through Patient Care Coordinators (PCCs) to ensure effective deployment of the care delivery system.
  • Coaches PCCs in leadership of associates.
  • Creates positive work environments and ensures associate retention and engagement.
  • Plans staffing and scheduling efficiently.
  • Collaborates across system resources for associate education and development.
• Fiscal Management:
  • Participates in planning activities for emergency services.
  • Develops budgets for human resources, operating expenses, and capital expenditures.
  • Deploys the fiscal plan effectively and analyzes variances to initiate appropriate management plans.
  • Uses data and outcome information from various systems and sources.
• Environmental and General Management:
  • Ensures compliance with accreditation, regulatory requirements, and EMTALA regulations.
  • Oversees the general upkeep of physical facilities and patient care equipment.
  • Leads implementation of technology and other assigned projects.

Requirements

• Education/Formal Training:
  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration or Nursing.
• Work Experience:
  • 3-5 years of emergency nursing with demonstrated leadership capabilities.
• Licenses and Certifications:
  • Required: Registered Nurse (Tennessee Board of Nursing), Basic Life Support (American Heart Association).
  • Preferred: Registered Nurse licensure in Mississippi or Arkansas.

Supervision

Provides supervision for all associates assigned to the Emergency Services department, including professional, technical, and service associates.

Physical Demands

• Physical activities may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
• Medium work: exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
• Close visual acuity required for assessing patients, preparing data, transcribing, and extensive reading.
• Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
• Exposure to patient body fluids and hazardous materials.
• Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
