Job Responsibilities
The Clinical Coordinator oversees the clinical education experience for Surgical Technology students, ensuring they receive quality hands-on training that meets accreditation standards and prepares them for successful careers. This position coordinates student clinical placements, monitors and evaluates clinical performance, provides guidance and mentoring, and collaborates with faculty and healthcare partners to ensure students achieve required competencies. The Clinical Coordinator also supports program accreditation, student advising, and continuous program improvement while promoting professionalism and excellence in surgical technology education.
Minimum And Additional Requirements
- Associate degree in Surgical Technology from an accredited institution.
- Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST®) credential through the NBSTSA, with certification maintained through continuing education.
- At least three (3) years of recent operating room experience as a practicing Surgical Technologist.
- Minimum of one (1) year of teaching, clinical instruction, or clinical education experience.
- Ability to assist with classroom, laboratory, simulation, and clinical instruction.
- Ability to evaluate student clinical performance using standardized evaluation tools.
- Ability to provide feedback, mentoring, and academic support to students.
- Ability to monitor, document, and verify student clinical progress and competencies.
- Knowledge of AST Core Curriculum and ARC/STSA Standards and Guidelines.
- Ability to ensure student completion of required clinical competencies, including a minimum of 120 first-scrub surgical procedures and all required case categories.
- Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, clinical preceptors, healthcare partners, and students.
- Proficiency with electronic clinical tracking systems, learning management systems, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to maintain compliance with institutional, state, and accreditation requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Surgical Technology, Health Sciences, Nursing, or related healthcare field.
- Two (2) or more years of teaching, clinical instruction, or academic experience in Surgical Technology or a related health discipline.
- Previous experience as a Clinical Coordinator, Clinical Instructor, or Surgical Technology educator.
- Experience with ARC/STSA accreditation processes, self-studies, and site visits.
- Experience in curriculum development, program assessment, or continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Experience developing and managing clinical affiliate relationships and clinical education sites.
- Experience using advanced learning management systems and educational technologies.
- Familiarity with healthcare compliance requirements (HIPAA, OSHA, immunization tracking, background checks, etc.).
- Experience participating in advisory committees, program evaluation, or workforce development initiatives.
