About the role

The Clinical Associate supports Cumberland Heights’ mission by assisting counseling staff with direct and indirect services to patients, facilitating a safe and therapeutic milieu, and helping patients engage in their own treatment and recovery.

Responsibilities

• Provide information, including formal and informal orientation, to patients or family members regarding clinical programs, services, content, schedules, and guidelines.
• Help create and maintain a welcoming, safe, and healing environment for patients and families throughout the continuum of care.
• Assist counseling staff with initial and ongoing assessments through data collection and direct observation of patients and families within the therapeutic milieu.
• Assist in performing luggage and personal property searches.
• Provide addiction and recovery-related psycho-education to individuals, groups, and families as assigned, and facilitate or coordinate community groups, in-house and outside 12-step meetings, and 12-step discussion/study groups.
• Transport patients to 12-step meetings or other therapeutic recreation activities using company vehicles, adhering to the Fleet Management Safety Program.
• Assist Activities Services staff with recreation, art, music, and adventure-based therapies as assigned.
• Manage the patient community as a therapeutic milieu, holding patients and families accountable for behavior consistent with community guidelines and recovery principles.
• Intervene in clinical and community crises to leverage them for therapeutic value, including de-escalation, CPR, and First Aid as needed.
• Participate in team meetings, treatment plan reviews, staff meetings, and quality management teams as assigned.
• Document pertinent clinical information into the electronic patient record.
• May assist in providing transportation for admitting and existing patients.
• Recommend ways to improve the quality and delivery of services.
• Ensure proper handling and distribution of company funds.
• Maintain confidentiality of company and patient information.
• React productively to change and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED is required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• One (1) year of experience in addictions treatment preferred.
• CPRS certification is preferred but not required.
• Valid Tennessee Driver’s License preferred (may use company van to transport patients).
• Intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
• Ability to quickly learn and use various clinical software.
• Strong problem-solving, analytical, and information interpretation skills.
• Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and patient needs in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to analyze complex situations, make crucial decisions, and know when to seek consultation.
• Cultural sensitivity and openness to a wide variety of patients’ experiences.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
• Ability to interact collaboratively and courteously with patients and co-workers while providing guidance, instruction, or training.
• Ability to model and teach the 12-step programs and philosophy.
• Ability to de-escalate individuals in crisis calmly and professionally, and work effectively in stressful situations.
• Ability to present to hostile or disinterested groups.
• If recovering, eighteen months of verifiable abstinence is required; active participation in a twelve-step program preferred.

Work Environment

• Position is based on a 177-acre campus, requiring walking outside to various buildings and adherence to normal safety precautions.
• Frequent contact with people in crisis, including those who are emotionally volatile, may require additional safety measures.
• May perform CPR/First Aid as needed (certification or eligibility is required).
• Subject to varying shifts, including weekends, and may require staying overnight for inclement weather as part of critical staffing.
• Some travel to other off-site Cumberland Heights facilities may be required.
• Ability to lift up to 20 lbs and/or push/pull up to 40 lbs; navigate uneven and rural terrain.
• Requires the ability to speak, hear, see, sit, walk, stand, reach, and use fine/gross motor skills.
