Clinical Assistant Professor - College of Dental Medicine - Illinois

About the Role

The Clinical Assistant Professor Faculty will report to the Associate Dean for Clinical Education and work directly with students in the patient care clinic, supervising all areas of general dentistry. This role involves mentoring pre-doctoral students, demonstrating procedures, and adhering to CDMI protocols and guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Supervise students in the patient care clinic across all areas of general dentistry.
• Interact positively with students, treating them as future colleagues.
• Demonstrate procedures on patients and model exemplary patient-centered care.
• Adhere to CDMI protocols, guidelines, calibrations, and policies in dental care delivery.
• Learn and demonstrate competence in current and emerging dental technologies (e.g., rotary endodontics, CAD/CAM dentistry, 3D printing, lasers).
• Proactively mentor students in evidence-based dentistry and emerging technologies.
• Serve as a lifelong learner by adopting new techniques, materials, and treatment protocols.
• Adapt teaching techniques to meet individual student needs.
• Serve on assigned college committees.
• Maintain professionalism and collegiality with faculty, students, staff, and patients.
• Develop and deliver lectures following CDMI protocols.
• Complete courses in teaching methods, including lecture delivery and exam development.
• Use the college’s digital patient record-keeping system competently.
• Complete patient notes and codes in a timely manner.
• Evaluate students daily, quarterly, or weekly as required.
• Meet with the Associate Dean for Clinical Education for performance reviews.
• Collaborate with dental specialists to model patient-centered care.
• Mentor students in small groups as requested.
• Support faculty calibration and adherence to college protocols and curriculum.
• Fulfill additional responsibilities as requested by the Associate Dean for Clinical Education.

Requirements

• Earned DDS/DMD degree.
• Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in general dentistry.
• Eligibility for and ability to obtain licensure in Illinois.
• Ability to obtain an unrestricted DEA license.
• Commitment to educating and empowering students with diverse clinical and academic abilities.

Physical Demands

• Ability to circulate among student operatories during patient care hours without disturbing procedures.
• Capability to work chairside to evaluate and demonstrate procedures for students.
• Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while demonstrating procedures.
• Effective communication, listening, and engagement during student learning.
• Tolerance for lights and noises associated with a dental patient care clinic.
• Capability to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds regularly and up to 25 pounds occasionally.
• Specific vision abilities, including close and distance vision, and extended computer use.
