Clinical Assistant Professor - College of Dental Medicine - IL

About the Role

The Clinical Assistant Professor will report to the Associate Dean for Clinical Education and work directly with students in the patient care clinic, supervising all areas of general dentistry. This role involves educating and empowering students with a wide range of clinical and academic abilities while serving as a positive role model in professionalism and lifelong learning.

Responsibilities

• Supervise students in the patient care clinic across all areas of general dentistry.
• Interact positively with students, treating them as future colleagues.
• Demonstrate procedures on patients and competently treat patients in all areas of general dentistry.
• Adhere to CDMI protocols, guidelines, calibrations, and policies in delivering dental care.
• Use and demonstrate competence in current and emerging dental technologies, including rotary endodontics, CAD/CAM dentistry, 3D printing, and lasers.
• Mentor pre-doctoral students in all areas of dentistry, emphasizing evidence-based technologies.
• Serve as an example of an active lifelong learner by adopting new techniques, technologies, materials, and treatment protocols.
• Adapt teaching techniques and styles to meet individual student needs.
• Serve on assigned college or university committees.
• Maintain professional, respectful, and collegial interactions with faculty, students, staff, and patients.
• Develop and deliver lectures following CDMI protocols and guidelines.
• Complete courses in teaching methods, including lecture delivery and examination/assessment development.
• Use the college’s patient digital record-keeping system and related software competently.
• Complete all patient chart notes and codes in a timely manner.
• Evaluate students daily, weekly, or quarterly as required by the college.
• Demonstrate collaborative relationships with dental specialists to model patient-centered care.
• Mentor students in small groups as requested by the college.
• Work collaboratively as part of the faculty team, supporting calibration and adherence to college protocols and standards.
• Fulfill additional responsibilities as requested by the Associate Dean for Clinical Education.

Requirements

• Earned DDS/DMD degree.
• Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in general dentistry.
• Eligibility for and ability to obtain licensure in the state of Illinois.
• Ability to obtain an unrestricted DEA license.

Physical Demands

• Ability to circulate among student operatories during patient care hours to evaluate, provide feedback, and grade procedures without disturbing students.
• Capability to sit or stand chairside and demonstrate procedures on dental patients as needed.
• Ability to communicate, listen, and follow along with student learning activities.
• Tolerance for lights and noises associated with a dental patient care clinic.
• Capability to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 25 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities, including close and distance vision, particularly for extended computer use.
