Clinical Assistant I – Gastroenterology
About the role
The Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, along with the Scully Endoscopy Center, diagnoses and treats patients with digestive problems and conditions. As a Clinical Assistant, you will assist LPNs, RNs, and other healthcare staff in providing exceptional patient support and attention.
Responsibilities
- Provide professional nursing care to patients as appropriate.
- Accurately administer medications and document nursing activities such as medical records, authorization forms, and laboratory requisitions.
- Perform pain management assessments and document findings.
- Recognize and report changes in patient status to the Charge Nurse or Physician.
- Implement and follow through with nursing interventions.
- Maintain complete and updated patient documentation and files.
- Teach patients as needed under the supervision of RN or Physician.
- Adhere to National Patient Safety Goals as outlined by JCAHO.
- Follow Code Blue protocol as per clinic policy.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Program
- Current Florida licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
- Knowledge of Infection Control Practices
- Computer literacy

- One year of clinical experience
Physical Requirements
- Frequent walking, sitting, and standing.
- Frequent talking and listening when giving instruction and explanations.
- Frequent use of the phone, fax machines, and occasional use of the computer.
- Heavy, constant lifting and moving patients, carrying equipment, supplies, and materials up to 50 pounds without help and over 50 pounds with the help of mechanical devices or other personnel.
- Stooping, pushing, and pulling when moving patients into position for treatment; also reaching, handling, feeling, and manipulating equipment into position.
- Working conditions: Indoor in air-conditioned areas.
- Potential exposure to blood and bloodborne pathogens requiring the wearing of gloves, masks, gowns, and goggles as appropriate.
- Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
