Job Description
Aid physicians in conducting medical procedures within the office setting. Duties include phlebotomy, laboratory testing, quality control, instrument troubleshooting, and maintenance. Key responsibilities involve ensuring proper quality control before patient testing, performing blood work, drawing blood, adhering to laboratory procedures, preparing slides, sending lab results, maintaining logs, and documenting all activities in the patient's chart.
- Perform quality control procedures before patient testing.
- Conduct laboratory blood work.
- Draw blood specimens.
- Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing.
- Execute technical laboratory procedures accurately and promptly, meeting regulatory agency standards.
- Prepare blood or bone marrow slides for evaluation.
- Send lab results to appropriate facilities as per patient insurance plans.
- Keep test report logs, quality control logs, equipment records, and checklists up-to-date according to regulatory agencies.
- Adhere to AON patient identification policy during each encounter.
- Take vital signs, measure height and weight, assess pain levels, and conduct PHQ9 depression screenings as directed by physicians.
- Prepare patients for physicians and document in the Onco/EMR system.
- Receive lab reports via various methods and document in the patient's chart or Onco/EMR for physician review.
- Assist physicians with medical procedures such as bone marrows, fine needle aspirations, paracentesis, and pelvic exams.
- Document thorough medical records for patients.
- Create encounter forms for billing and initial all steps in the process in the EMR for electronic superbills.
- Note all quality control and quality assurance corrective actions.
- Show physicians critical blood counts according to guidelines.
- Maintain adequate supply inventory and place orders as needed.
- Tackle instrument malfunctions and contact service companies as necessary.
- Perform EKG testing when required.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal regulatory agencies.
- Participate in compliance testing and complete required CEUs annually.
- Maintain cleanliness of the laboratory and equipment.
- Comply with all relevant laws and regulations regarding patient care, rights, safety, billing, and collections.
- Adhere to AON and departmental policies and procedures, including IT policies and the Disaster Recovery Plan.
- Preserve confidentiality of all patient information.
- Train new employees on related job duties.
- Work at any AON location to support business needs.
- Be prepared to work overtime and weekends as needed.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Required BLS certification.
- Valid driver's license and vehicle for travel to other clinic locations.
- One year of experience as a medical assistant in clinic or physician's office, capable of performing venipuncture.
- Analysis & Critical Thinking: Solid problem-solving, analysis, decision-making, planning, time management, and organizational skills.
- Interpersonal Effectiveness: Developed interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, diplomacy, tact, conflict management, delegation, and diversity awareness.
- Communication Skills: Good command of the English language, with proficiency in MS Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and proficiency in EMR.
- Self-Management: Effective time management, stress management, self-motivation, self-starter, and ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Computer Skills: Proficiency in MS Office and EMR.
- Standard Core Workdays/Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Occasional overtime and weekend shifts may be required based on location hours and operational needs.
