CLERK TYPIST I-IV (POLICE RECORDS TECHNICIAN)

Applications are being accepted beginning Friday, August 21, 2026, through 4:30 pm, Friday, September 4, 2026. Currently there are six (6) Grade level III vacancies in the Records Division.

Pay

  • Grade I: $19.026 - $25.763 hourly
  • Grade II: $20.491 - $27.795 hourly
  • Grade III: $22.067 - $30.179 hourly
  • Grade IV: $23.751 - $32.460 hourly

Schedule

This position may require working nights or graveyard shifts, weekends, holidays, and occasionally flex hours.

Responsibilities

  • Perform increasingly difficult and responsible clerical duties under supervision
  • Type forms, memos, and correspondence
  • Establish and maintain alphabetical, numerical, and chronological files
  • Operate office machines and make mathematical computations
  • Interpret and apply departmental policies and procedures
  • Act as receptionist by screening calls, receiving visitors, and providing answers to inquiries
  • Open and distribute mail
  • Interface with other departments, the public, vendors, and outside agencies in person or by telephone
  • Collect, disperse, deposit, and balance monies
  • Create charts, graphs, and forms
  • Take inventory
  • Compose correspondence, write desk manuals, compile information, and prepare reports
  • May assist with interviewing, hiring, evaluating, or disciplining subordinates
  • May train and assign subordinates
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements

  • A Keyboarding Skill Certificate from an approved government, employment, or training agency (obtained within the last 12 months) displaying ability to type at a minimum net speed of 40 wpm (proof required). The Human Resources Department also accepts a 5-minute keyboarding skills certificate obtained online during the past 12 months.
  • Ability to pass a thorough background investigation (required for Police Department positions)
  • A valid driver’s license, or the ability to arrange necessary and timely transportation for field travel, may be required for some assignments
  • Proof of required documents (e.g., degree or transcripts) must be uploaded to the online application at the time of filing. Documents must contain the applicant's name or other identifying characteristic. Degrees must indicate the field of study, and transcripts must indicate field of study and degree conferred date.
  • Candidates with degrees from colleges or universities outside the United States must attach proof of educational equivalence at the time of filing.

Skills

  • Ability to file alphabetically and numerically
  • Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations
  • Ability to correct errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public, both in person and on the telephone
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to type accurately on a personal computer at a minimum net speed of 30 wpm
  • For Police Department positions: Understanding of law enforcement practices and basic operations of police record functions, police procedures, rules, regulations, terminology, and law enforcement codes
  • For Police Department positions: Knowledge of processes related to the release of data and reports to the public and other agencies
  • For Police Department positions: Ability to interpret the Rules and Regulations of the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) (desired for Records Division positions)
  • Bilingual/biliterate skills (Spanish, Khmer, or Tagalog) are desired for some positions

Selection Process

  • Application Packet: Qualifying
  • Occupational Written Examination: 100% weight (minimum passing score of 70 required)
  • Certification by score bands may be considered based on exam results
  • The eligible list will remain in effect for at least one year
  • Veterans may receive additional credit points (10 points for eligible veterans, 15 points for disabled veterans). A copy of the DD-214 (Member 4 form) indicating honorable discharge must be attached to the application.

This position is eligible for Local Hiring Preferences and Veterans Preference Points. The City of Long Beach will consider qualified applicants with a criminal history pursuant to the California Fair Chance Act.
