About the role
The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI) is a nationally and internationally recognized institution that educates children and young adults who are blind or have low vision. The School serves hundreds of students annually, many of whom face significant challenges and require specialized support.
Responsibilities
- Supervise students in dormitories, classrooms, lunchrooms, and off-campus trips under the supervision of the teacher or residential leader.
- Supervise student housekeeping activities and inspect dorms and living areas for safety and cleanliness.
- Prepare necessary materials as directed by the teacher and/or supervisor.
- Aid in activities outside the classroom and dormitories.
- Support discipline policy of the classroom/residential program, resolving conflicts between students and assisting in monitoring behavior plans.
- Affirm that student hygiene, toileting, and safety needs are met.
- Attend workday at assigned worksites as an essential function of the position.
- Support the nine dimensions of student development, including cultural, intellectual, life planning, political, spiritual, physical, emotional, sexual, and social growth.
- Coordinate programs and recreational activities for students and document programming plans, incidents, and student progress.
What You'll Need for Success
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Basic understanding of the characteristics, needs, and effective methods of guidance for students of varying ages and abilities.
- Knowledge of state, federal, and agency rules and regulations.
- Ability to keep accurate records concerning the care of the students.
- Ability to supervise students in dormitories, classrooms, and other on- and off-campus activities.
- Effective communication skills.
- Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
