Compensation: LPN – starting at $27.25/hour | RN – starting at $53,323/year
Responsibilities
- Provide health services for the assigned work site; maintain accurate and required student health records; coordinate with school nurses at other sites.
- Provide instruction, counseling, and guidance to students, parents, staff, and others regarding health issues.
- Uphold professional standards, the Nurse Practice Act, state and local statutes, and District policies and guidelines.
- Maintain current health records as required by law for each student; compile and file legally-required reports.
- Establish and maintain a comprehensive school health program.
- Monitor immunization status of current and new students for compliance with law.
- Obtain signed parental permits for routine and emergency care.
- Collect information about the health and developmental status of students systematically and continuously.
- Maintain files on current health status, ongoing medical concerns, and known allergies while respecting students' privacy and confidentiality.
- Provide appropriate nursing interventions and monitor student status as needed.
- Ensure continuity of care upon transfer or graduation.
- Coordinate service provision with IHS staff and other community health care sources.
- Provide or make referrals for follow-up care.
- Develop nursing care plans with specific goals and interventions for students with special needs.
- Implement actions promoting or restoring health, assess student responses, and collaborate with professionals to achieve optimal wellness and learning.
- Participate in IEP conferences when appropriate.
- Provide staff education related to specific student needs.
- Store, log, and dispense over-the-counter and prescription medication to students according to physicians' standing orders and the Nurse Practice Act.
- Assist students, families, and school personnel in achieving optimal wellness through health education.
- Maintain confidential emergency treatment information for staff members.
- Monitor blood pressure, blood sugar, etc., and provide related education for individual health needs.
- Participate in the health curriculum committee and in-service training programs.
- Assist in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.
- Participate in interviews, screenings, and recommendations of nursing personnel for employment.
- Supervise and train new employees.
- Perform Arizona state-mandated health, vision, and hearing screenings; maintain annual hearing machine calibration.
- Complete annual Arizona state-mandated immunization screening and hearing reports.
- File reports of suspected abuse/neglect upon initial contact.
- Administer annual bloodborne pathogen in-service for all school staff.
- Complete employee incident and workers' compensation evaluations and assessments.
- Coordinate quarterly biohazard pickup.
- Budget and order medical supplies.
- Maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, staff, parents, and school issues.
- Provide a welcoming atmosphere for students, staff, parents, and the community.
- Perform responsibilities in an ethical and professional manner.
- Maintain punctual and regular attendance.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) License.
- Current Hearing Screening Certificate.
- Valid IVP Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card.
- Recent experience in public health nursing and/or school nursing is desirable.
- Must be 21 years of age or older upon hire.
- Bilingualism in Spanish is beneficial.
- Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups, both verbally and in writing.
- Thorough knowledge of office machines, computers, and Microsoft Office (Google, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to use or learn student information system software and other necessary department software.
Physical Demands
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to regularly push, pull, or lift weights up to 15 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
- Regular talking and listening.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and sitting.
