About the role
The Classification Analyst plays a critical role in the Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) by providing complex job evaluation, analyses, and consultation for assigned agency programs. This role involves conducting individual position audits to ensure employees are correctly classified, writing formal classification determinations, and designing and administering job classification studies.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic planning and guidance to agency managers and supervisors.
- Train and mentor other HR employees on topics related to job classification and organizational development.
- Interpret or apply job classification criteria, review job duties, position descriptions, or organizational structures to ensure alignment with job classes and statewide standards.
- Research and gather information from various sources to analyze and synthesize complex details.
- Communicate and explain job audit results to employees and management in a clear and concise manner.
- Build strong and collaborative partnerships with managers and supervisors.
- Proactively seek opportunities to stay informed of division and program workforce needs.
Requirements
- Experience interpreting or applying job classification criteria, reviewing job duties, position descriptions, or organizational structures to ensure alignment with job classes and statewide standards.
- Skills demonstrating research and job analysis.
- Skills in writing formal reports, research papers, or memorandums.
- Relationship building skills sufficient to build strong, collaborative working partnerships with agency managers and supervisors and be regarded as a trusted advisor.
- Critical thinking and strategic planning skills sufficient to analyze and evaluate complex information, research, and evaluate alternatives, independently make sound decisions, resolve conflicts, and provide guidance on a variety of HR issues.
- Communication skills to explain sensitive, controversial decisions to employees and management in a clear and concise manner.
Qualifications
- Human Resources Specialist 2: Two (2) years* professional Human Resources experience with general knowledge of job analysis, compensation analysis, and/or classification.
- Human Resources Specialist 3: Three (3) years* of professional Human Resources experience which includes at least two (2) years Human Resources experience conducting job analysis, compensation analysis, and classification of positions in a variety of classifications and levels.
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Industrial Psychology, Organizational Management, or other closely related field as determined by the agency may substitute one (1) year of experience.
Skills
- Experience with a job evaluation system such as the Hay method.
- Experience interpreting current employment laws, regulations, and policies related to classification, recruitment, selection, hiring, promotion, and/or retention of employees.
- Familiarity working with multiple policies, collective bargaining agreements, or administrative procedures—specifically around classification, compensation, pay equity, or work-out-of-class determinations.
- Experience conducting public sector job analysis / classification.
- Experience conducting job classification and/or compensation studies.
