Civil Superintendent

Position Summary CALTEC Corp. is seeking an experienced Civil Superintendent to manage field operations on an active construction project in Southern California. This position will have overall field responsibility for assigned projects, including management of subcontractors, coordination between trades, schedule execution, safety, quality, inspections, and daily site operations. The Superintendent will also directly manage the Company's self-perform operations through the assigned foreman. Current self-perform scopes include earthwork and demolition, with concrete demolition representing a significant portion of the demolition work. The Superintendent is not expected to perform the foreman's day-to-day crew-lead role. The Superintendent must manage through the foreman by establishing the work plan, production expectations, manpower and equipment requirements, and holding the foreman and crew accountable for results. The successful candidate should have a strong civil construction background but also be capable of managing the entire project site. This includes supervising subcontracted trades such as masonry, concrete, utilities, electrical, mechanical, and other building and site trades depending on the project. Primary Responsibilities Experience with concrete and site demolition is preferred. Overall Project Field Management Manage day-to-day field operations for assigned project.Maintain overall responsibility for field schedule, safety, quality, coordination, inspections, and site logistics.Supervise and coordinate CALTEC self-perform personnel and project subcontractors.Coordinate multiple trades working concurrently on the project.Develop and maintain short-term field schedules and look-ahead plans.Identify upcoming constraints and resolve them before they affect the project schedule.Coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, access, inspections, and information required for upcoming work.Conduct or participate in subcontractor coordination meetings and field planning meetings.Maintain communication with the Project Manager regarding schedule, manpower, cost, changes, inspections, and field conditions.Coordinate work with owners, inspectors, design professionals, utility representatives, and other project stakeholders.Verify that subcontractors are properly staffed and progressing according to the project schedule.Hold subcontractors accountable for contractual requirements, schedule commitments, safety, quality, and completion of their work.Identify incomplete, deficient, or nonconforming work and require timely correction.Coordinate sequencing between trades to prevent conflicts and rework.Maintain an organized, safe, and productive project site. Self-Perform Earthwork and Demolition On projects where CALTEC self-performs earthwork or demolition, the Superintendent will have direct responsibility for planning and managing those operations. Earthwork Operations Work May Include: Clearing and grubbingSite preparationExcavationMass gradingRough gradingFine gradingTrenchingBackfillMoisture conditioningCompactionAggregate base placementSubgrade preparationSoil import and exportLoading and haulingUtility excavationPotholing and utility exposureErosion and sediment controlsSite drainagePreparation for paving, concrete, and other improvements The Superintendent Will: Review civil plans, grading plans, utility plans, geotechnical reports, specifications, and survey information.Develop the earthwork sequence and production plan.Determine required manpower, equipment, trucking, and support resources.Establish measurable daily and weekly production targets.Give the foreman clear production objectives and work areas.Monitor actual production against planned production.Track excavation, import, export, backfill, and aggregate quantities.Monitor labor and equipment utilization.Identify production constraints and adjust the operation as necessary.Coordinate survey, staking, elevations, slopes, grades, and control points.Coordinate soils testing and inspection requirements.Verify lift thickness, moisture conditioning, compaction, and testing requirements.Coordinate soil import, export, trucking, recycling, and disposal.Minimize unnecessary material handling, equipment movement, and idle time. Demolition Operations CALTEC may also self-perform demolition work, including concrete demolition. Work May Include: Concrete slabsConcrete pavingFoundations and footingsCurbs and guttersSidewalksWalls and miscellaneous concreteAsphalt pavingSawcuttingHydraulic breaker operationsExcavation associated with demolitionLoading and haulingRecycling and disposalRemoval of miscellaneous site improvements The Superintendent Will: Confirm demolition limits before work begins.Review demolition plans and existing conditions.Coordinate utility locating, potholing, shutdowns, and protection requirements.Protect structures, utilities, paving, landscaping, and other improvements that are to remain.Plan equipment, attachments, sawcutting, trucking, and disposal requirements.Establish production expectations for the demolition crew.Monitor demolition quantities and progress.Coordinate dust, silica, noise, debris, and public-protection controls.Maintain documentation of disposal, recycling, trucking, and quantities removed. Previous concrete demolition and site demolition experience is preferred but is not required if the candidate has strong civil superintendent experience. Foreman and Crew Management The Superintendent will supervise the assigned foreman and self-perform crew. Responsibilities Include: Establish the daily and weekly work plan.Provide the foreman with clearly defined work areas and production targets.Confirm that the foreman understands the plans, schedule, and priorities.Verify that the crew has the manpower, equipment, materials, access, and information required to complete the work.Monitor the foreman's performance and effectiveness in directing the crew.Review actual production against planned production.Identify causes of poor production before simply adding manpower or equipment.Coach and develop the foreman when improvement is needed.Hold the foreman accountable for crew performance, attendance, safety, quality, and productivity.Address recurring performance problems promptly.Coordinate with Company management regarding staffing or disciplinary issues when necessary.Maintain the proper distinction between superintendent and foreman responsibilities while remaining actively involved in field production. Subcontractor Management The Superintendent is responsible for more than the self-perform operation. The position requires management and coordination of subcontractors performing other portions of the project. Planning and Scheduling Review and understand the overall project schedule.Prepare detailed three-week and two-week look-ahead schedules.Break scheduled activities into daily field objectives.Coordinate the sequence of self-perform and subcontractor work.Identify required submittals, RFIs, inspections, materials, equipment, and owner decisions before they affect field work.Track actual progress against planned progress.Identify activities affecting the critical path.Develop field recovery plans when work falls behind.Coordinate upcoming work with the Project Manager.Communicate schedule changes and field impacts promptly. Quality Control and Inspections Understand applicable plans, specifications, approved submittals, and details.Verify that work is installed in accordance with project requirements.Conduct field quality reviews before requesting inspections.Coordinate City, County, special, soils, structural, fire, utility, and other inspections as applicable.Coordinate testing agencies and special inspectors.Track failed inspections and corrective work.Require deficiencies to be corrected before work is concealed.Maintain inspection readiness.Document completed and concealed work with photographs where appropriate.Coordinate punch-list completion and project closeout. Safety Maintain overall responsibility for field safety on assigned projects.Enforce CALTEC Corp. safety requirements and project-specific safety rules.Require subcontractors to comply with applicable safety requirements.Verify that self-perform foremen conduct daily pre-task planning and crew safety meetings.Plan work involving excavation, trenching, heavy equipment, demolition, trucking, public access, utilities, and other high-risk activities.Maintain safe equipment travel paths and exclusion zones.Enforce PPE, silica controls, dust controls, traffic control, trench protection, fall protection, and housekeeping requirements.Stop unsafe work when necessary.Correct unsafe conditions promptly.Report incidents, near misses, property damage, and utility strikes.Participate in incident investigation and corrective-action planning. Existing Utilities and Field Conditions Review available utility information before excavation or demolition begins.Coordinate utility locating, marking, potholing, and field verification.Establish safe excavation procedures around existing utilities.Stop affected work when unknown utilities or unexpected field conditions are discovered.Protect utilities and improvements that are to remain.Document unknown or differing conditions with photographs, measurements, and field information.Notify the Project Manager immediately of conditions that may affect cost or schedule.Redirect crews or subcontractors to other productive work where possible while issues are resolved.Do not knowingly proceed with changed or extra work without appropriate authorization except where necessary to protect life or property. Equipment and Production Management For Self-perform Work, The Superintendent Will: Plan excavators, loaders, dozers, skid steers, compactors, breakers, water trucks, haul trucks, and other required equipment.Match equipment and attachments to the work and production goals.Monitor equipment utilization and productivity.Minimize equipment idle time.Coordinate fueling, inspections, maintenance, repairs, and replacement equipment.Review operator performance.Coordinate haul routes, loading locations, truck quantities, cycle times, and disposal locations.Track trucking, dumping, recycling, and delivery tickets.Evaluate the cost and production effect of adding or removing equipment. Required Qualifications Minimum 7 years of construction field experience with significant civil construction experience.Minimum 3 years of experience as a Superintendent, Civil Superintendent, General Foreman, or comparable field leader.Strong earthwork experience.Experience managing foremen and self-perform construction crews.Experience managing subcontractors and coordinating multiple trades.Ability to read and understand civil, grading, utility, architectural, structural, and demolition plans.Ability to understand elevations, slopes, grades, dimensions, details, and specifications.Experience developing short-term field schedules and production plans.Experience coordinating construction inspections and testing.Strong working knowledge of excavation, grading, backfill, compaction, and heavy equipment operations.Understanding of underground utility protection and excavation safety.Ability to identify field problems and develop practical solutions.Ability to hold foremen, employees, and subcontractors accountable for schedule and performance.Strong field communication and documentation skills.Ability to use smartphones, tablets, email, plans, photographs, and electronic project-management systems.Valid driver's license where driving between work locations is an essential duty.Ability to report to project sites throughout Southern California.Availability for early mornings, nights, weekends, and overtime when project conditions require. A college degree is not required. Relevant field experience and demonstrated ability to manage complex construction operations are more important for this position.
