Civil Structural Engineer IV - Substation Design
About the Role
As a Senior Substation Civil/Structural Engineer at Rosendin, you will manage all aspects of electrical substation civil/structural engineering design for HV/MV substation projects. You will collaborate with preconstruction, estimating, and project execution teams to ensure designs meet all applicable codes, standards, and Rosendin expectations. This role offers a true sense of ownership and the opportunity to work on high-profile projects with a proven industry leader.
Responsibilities
- Perform electrical substation civil/structural design, including permitting support, site layout, grading design, main equipment foundations (e.g., circuit breakers, transformers, switches), cable trenches, manholes, cable trays, retaining wall design, stormwater analysis, containment structure design, and survey coordination.
- Review civil construction specifications, cost estimates, engineering proposals, and project schedules.
- Provide support for transmission line right-of-way access improvement design, including culvert sizing, stormwater drainage analysis, stabilization specification, construction support, and inspection.
- Analyze civil elements related to high-voltage power transmission and substation design.
- Partner with clients, vendors, permitting agencies, and stakeholders to ensure project completion.
- Assist with estimating to approximate civil quantities for pricing exercises.
- Develop civil engineering scope of work for pursuits.
- Interface with project management and field supervision teams to provide civil engineering input for potential projects.
- Review (QA/QC) civil engineering drawing packages from contracted firms for solar PV projects.
- Collaborate with project management, field/operations teams, and other engineering disciplines to ensure civil design aspects meet Rosendin standards and consider constructability.
- Attend project meetings (on-site or remotely).
- Propose alternative engineering methods for cost savings.
- Interface directly with civil engineering subcontractors to ensure cost-effective and code-compliant designs.
- Provide civil engineering construction support as projects progress.

Requirements
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Project) and Civil 3D.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks, adapting to changing priorities.
- Experience working with other engineering disciplines (electrical, structural, geotechnical).
- Ability to work under time pressure with a positive attitude.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Technical knowledge of design codes and software (Civil 3D, AutoCAD, MicroStation, stormwater analysis programs).
- Understanding of basic practices for evaluating engineering and design issues.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
- 10+ years of related engineering experience, either in consulting or with an electric utility.
- Project management experience.
- Extensive knowledge of managing project scopes, schedules, and budgets.
- Required experience in civil/structural design for MV to HV electrical substations and/or electrical switchyards, including:
- Site grading and drainage analysis.
- Detention basin design.
- Structural foundation and retaining wall design.
- Geotechnical analysis and pavement design.
- SPCC and SW3P design.
- Wetland access roads and security fencing.
Working Conditions
- General office environment: sitting for long periods, standing, walking, typing, carrying, pushing, bending.
- Work is primarily indoors with varying environmental conditions (e.g., fluorescent lighting, air conditioning).
- Noise levels are usually low to medium but can be loud on jobsites.
- Occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs.
- Travel up to 30%.
