About the role

The Civil Engineering Project Manager is responsible for overseeing, planning, coordinating, and executing multiple civil engineering projects from inception through completion. Reporting to a Managing Director or Director, this role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and the ability to manage teams. The Project Manager monitors project schedules, budgets, invoicing, and overall performance to ensure successful, profitable project delivery. This position requires a high level of self-motivation, problem-solving ability, and the application of broad engineering knowledge across diverse civil engineering assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Develops comprehensive project schedules, work plans, budgets, and technical proposals.
  • Manages multiple civil engineering projects concurrently, ensuring on-time and on-budget delivery.
  • Maintains project performance, including progress tracking, milestone completion, invoicing, and financial health.
  • Independently makes decisions on engineering matters within area of technical expertise.
  • Leads marketing efforts, including preparing proposals, participating in interviews, and building relationships with prospective clients.
  • Maintains strong client relationships through regular communication, problem solving, and ensuring superior customer service.
  • Performs and oversees technical analysis, engineering calculations, and the preparation of reports and documentation.
  • Initiates, reviews, and manages the development of engineering drawings, design plans, and construction documents.
  • Coordinates design concepts with internal engineering teams and external consultants to ensure cohesion and accuracy.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable engineering standards, building codes, regulations, and company quality control procedures.
  • Communicates project expectations, scope, and requirements clearly to team members and consultants.
  • Ensures project teams understand and uphold organizational policies, procedures, and the company mission.
  • Provides leadership, mentorship, and technical guidance to junior staff.
  • Tracks and manages project resources, schedules, workloads, and deliverables.
  • Identifies and mitigates project risks to maintain productivity and quality.
  • Ensures accurate documentation, technical integrity, and effective project coordination across all stages of design and development.

Requirements

Advanced technical knowledge within the field of civil engineering, including site development, grading and drainage design, stormwater management, utility infrastructure, and land development practices. Demonstrated ability to coordinate, prepare, review, and edit technical specifications as applied to civil engineering design and construction documentation. Strong technical leadership skills demonstrated through accountability, reliability, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to consistently meet project deadlines while delivering high-quality technical work. Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to clearly convey technical information to project team members, consultants, contractors, and project leadership. Ability to interact professionally and with integrity while representing the firm in coordination with internal teams, external consultants, and regulatory agencies. Advanced planning, organization, time management, and multitasking skills with strong attention to detail and accuracy across multiple concurrent projects. Demonstrated ability to manage complex technical assignments and meet competing deadlines in a fast-paced professional environment. Ability to independently manage civil engineering design scope for assigned projects from initial design through construction documentation with limited supervision. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills with the ability to resolve complex technical issues and elevate higher-level design challenges when appropriate. Ability to work independently while also leading and collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary project teams. Ability to provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineering staff, designers, and interns as part of project team development. Advanced proficiency in industry-standard design and documentation software including current versions of AutoCAD and related civil engineering tools. Working knowledge of visualization and modeling software such as Revit, 3D Studio, Form Z, or similar platforms used to support project coordination and presentation. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel for documentation, coordination, and project tracking. Thorough understanding of applicable building codes, zoning regulations, land development ordinances, and approval processes related to civil engineering and site development. Comprehensive understanding of building systems and site requirements as they relate to civil engineering design, including coordination with Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, and Geotechnical disciplines.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant civil engineering experience, preferably in an architecture and engineering environment, with at least 5 years focused on shopping centers, big box retail centers, mixed-use projects, fueling centers, restaurants, banks, roll-out programs, and commercial projects.
  • Professional engineering licensure is required.
