About the role

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) position in the competitive service for a senior Structural Engineer and design coordinator supporting a wide range of conventional and unconventional Military Construction projects across the Pacific Ocean Division (POD) area of responsibility.

Responsibilities

• Develop structural designs and coordinate design inputs from associated engineering disciplines.
• Perform technical reviews of structural designs produced by architectural-engineering firms and resolve structural design issues arising during construction.
• Provide structural expertise for projects with the most diverse, complex, or unconventional structural features, including troop living quarters; dining, medical, and dental facilities; multistory administrative buildings; reserve centers; instructional facilities; industrial shops; aircraft shelters; warehouses; recreational facilities; youth centers; and unique or one-of-a-kind facilities.
• Serve as the regional technical authority in structural engineering for all POD districts (Honolulu, Japan, Alaska, and Far East).
• Provide engineering guidance and advice on structural design, criteria, policies, and standards for military construction projects throughout the Pacific Basin.
• Develop, review, and evaluate complex structural designs, plans, specifications, calculations, and technical studies for conventional and specialized facilities, ensuring compliance with applicable engineering criteria, codes, and regulations.
• Conduct independent technical reviews, BCOES, constructability, operability, environmental, and sustainability reviews; identify deficiencies and recommend technical solutions.
• Lead and support multidisciplinary design teams, coordinating structural requirements with architectural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and other engineering disciplines to produce integrated design packages.
• Provide structural engineering support throughout project delivery and construction, resolving complex technical issues, evaluating design changes, supporting construction and project management teams, and providing field and on-site technical assistance.
• Act as district-level technical specialist for complex or controversial structural engineering issues, resolving technical disputes and deficiencies involving contractors, design firms, project managers, and other stakeholders.

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance.
• Valid state driver’s license to operate vehicles.
• Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a Professional Engineer license in good standing issued by any U.S. state or territory.

Minimum Qualifications

• Basic Requirement – 0810: Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in engineering from an ABET-accredited program; or coursework including differential and integral calculus plus advanced courses in five of the following: statics, dynamics, strength of materials, fluid mechanics/hydraulics, thermodynamics, electrical fields and circuits, nature and properties of materials, or comparable engineering science/physics areas; or a combination of education and experience meeting the standard.
• Specialized Experience (GS-12): One year of specialized experience performing structural engineering assignments involving development, review, and evaluation of structural designs, plans, specifications, calculations, and technical studies; providing technical guidance on complex structural engineering problems; and coordinating structural requirements with multidisciplinary project teams.
