About the role

Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS) is seeking a Civil Design Engineer to support the Department of Energy at the Y‑12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The employee will be on AIS’s staff augmentation team, taking day‑to‑day direction from Y‑12 staff while receiving pay, benefits, HR, and employment management from AIS. The role advances Y‑12’s mission to ensure a safe, secure, and reliable U.S. nuclear deterrent.

Responsibilities

• Develop high‑quality detailed design packages and provide engineering procurement and field technical support to implement those designs.
• Offer expertise for troubleshooting and technical assessments of plant facilities.
• Work effectively as a team member of an integrated project team or as a technical lead for multi‑discipline tasks; provide input to system engineers and other plant customers.
• Perform routine walk‑downs in existing plant facilities to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel.
• Apply technical expertise and wide application of civil engineering principles, theories, and concepts to solve difficult problems using established practices, codes, and standards.
• Provide self‑performed technical solutions for storm and storm drain designs and modifications, road design, soil evaluation, and oversight of outside engineering firms.
• Be familiar with consensus design codes; CAD drafting experience is preferred but not required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited school with a minimum of 20+ years of experience, or a Master’s degree with 19+ years of experience.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interface effectively with clients, production and support organizations, management, and hourly employees.
• Willingness to work in a production environment.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.

Pre‑employment requirements include a drug screen, and job‑related medical examinations may be required. This position may be designated as a Workplace Substance Abuse Program (WSAP) testing position, requiring ongoing random drug testing in addition to the pre‑employment screen.
