Civil Engineer, Level IV

About the role

Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS) is seeking a Civil Design Engineer to support the Department of Energy at the Y‑12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The employee will take day-to-day direction and assignments from Y‑12 staff while being employed by AIS, which provides pay, benefits, HR, and employment management functions.

Qualified applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screens, and/or background investigations to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.

Responsibilities

• Develop high-quality detailed design packages and provide engineering procurement and field technical support.
• Deliver expertise for troubleshooting and technical assessments of plant facilities.
• Work effectively as a team member of an integrated project team or as a technical lead for multi-discipline tasks.
• Provide input to system engineers and other plant customers.
• Perform routine walk-downs in existing plant facilities to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel.
• Apply technical expertise and wide application of civil engineering principles, theories, and concepts.
• Provide self-performed technical solutions to difficult problems using established engineering practices, codes, and standards.
• Perform storm and storm drain designs and modifications, road design, soil evaluation, and oversight of outside engineering firms.
• Be familiar with consensus design codes.
• CAD drafting experience is preferred but not required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited school with a minimum of 15–20 years of experience, or a Master’s with 14–18 years of experience.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interface effectively with clients, production and support organizations, management, and hourly employees.
• Willingness to work in a production environment.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.

• Ongoing random drug testing may be required for Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing-designated positions.
