About the role
Assist in small group and individual pupil instruction.
Responsibilities
- Assist students with instruction under the direction of the special education teacher
- Assist teacher in maintaining discipline
- Assist teacher with instructional activities
- Escort students from room to room
- Toileting students as required
- Work with both special education and regular students
- Assist teaching staff in the implementation of IEP
- Supervise students during recess and lunch
- Assist students with classroom assignments
- Copy materials for instructional purposes
- Assist teacher in filing material and preparing necessary paperwork
- Alert teachers to observed problems
- Support with toileting of students when needed
- Complete PMT (Positive Management Training) requirements
Requirements
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree
- Two years of college credit OR an associate’s (or higher) degree OR successful completion of a paraprofessional assessment (e.g., Parapro Assessment) covering mathematics, reading, writing, and instructional assistance
- Ability to read, comprehend, and write simple instructions and correspondence
- Ability to present information effectively in one-on-one and small group settings
- Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with units of American money, weight, volume, and distance
- Basic computer skills for job-related hardware and software applications
- Ability to follow detailed written or oral instructions and solve problems with concrete variables
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community
- Awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies
Physical demands
- Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear
- Regularly required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Must be able to push items up to 50 pounds (e.g., children on bikes or wheelchairs, furniture)
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds (heavier lifting should be done with assistance)
- Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision
Work environment
- Typical classroom noise levels with school children
- Work throughout the school building, on school grounds, and occasionally off campus
- Responsible for the safety and well-being of students in their charge
Pay
$22.12 - $25.18 per hour (per contractual agreement, BPS Contracts).
Schedule
6.5 hours per day, 8:45 AM to 3:45 PM. 26–27 school-year term.
