City-Wide Paraeducator, West Bristol

Currently located at West Bristol School. Reports to: Special Education Teacher.

About the role

Assist in small group and individual pupil instruction.

Responsibilities

• Assist students with instruction under the direction of the special education teacher
• Assist teacher in maintaining discipline
• Assist teacher with instructional activities
• Escort students from room to room
• Toileting students as required
• Work with both special education and regular students
• Assist teaching staff in the implementation of IEP
• Supervise students during recess and lunch
• Assist students with classroom assignments
• Copy materials for instructional purposes
• Assist teacher in filing material and preparing necessary paperwork
• Alert teachers to observed problems
• Support with toileting of students when needed
• Complete PMT (Positive Management Training) requirements

Requirements

• High School Diploma or General Education Degree
• Two years of college credit OR an associate’s (or higher) degree OR successful completion of a paraprofessional assessment (e.g., Parapro Assessment) covering mathematics, reading, writing, and instructional assistance
• Ability to read, comprehend, and write simple instructions and correspondence
• Ability to present information effectively in one-on-one and small group settings
• Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with units of American money, weight, volume, and distance
• Basic computer skills for job-related hardware and software applications
• Ability to follow detailed written or oral instructions and solve problems with concrete variables
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community
• Awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies

Physical demands

• Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear
• Regularly required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
• Must be able to push items up to 50 pounds (e.g., children on bikes or wheelchairs, furniture)
• Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds (heavier lifting should be done with assistance)
• Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision

Work environment

• Typical classroom noise levels with school children
• Work throughout the school building, on school grounds, and occasionally off campus
• Responsible for the safety and well-being of students in their charge

Pay

$22.12 - $25.18 per hour (per contractual agreement, BPS Contracts).

Schedule

6.5 hours per day, 8:45 AM to 3:45 PM. 26–27 school-year term.
