About the role

Assist in small group and individual pupil instruction.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with instruction under the direction of the special education teacher.
  • Assist teacher in maintaining discipline.
  • Assist teacher with instructional activities.
  • Escort students from room to room.
  • Assist with toileting of students when required.
  • Work with both special education and regular students.
  • Assist teaching staff in the implementation of IEP.
  • Supervise students during recess and lunch.
  • Assist students with classroom assignments.
  • Copy materials for instructional purposes.
  • Assist teacher in filing material and preparing all necessary paperwork.
  • Alert teachers to problems that may be observed.
  • PMT (Physical Management Training) required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree.
  • Two years of college credit OR hold an associate's (or higher) degree; OR successful completion of a paraprofessional assessment (e.g., Parapro Assessment) assessing content knowledge in mathematics, reading, and writing, and an understanding of how to assist in the instruction of these topics.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Basic mathematical skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with units of American money, weight, volume, and distance.
  • Basic knowledge and experience with job-related computer hardware and software applications.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear.
  • Regularly required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must be able to push items of fifty (50) pounds, such as pushing children on a bike or wheelchair or moving/rearranging furniture.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds; heavier lifting should be done with assistance.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision.

Work Environment

  • Noise level is typical of classrooms with school children.
  • Work throughout the school building, on school grounds, and occasionally off campus.
  • Responsible for the safety and well-being of students in his/her charge.

Pay

$22.12 - $25.18 per hour (per contractual agreement BPS Contracts)

Schedule

6 hours per day, 8:45 AM to 3:45 PM
26 - 27 school year
