About the role

The City of Barre, Vermont (pop. 8,500) is recruiting for an experienced public sector manager to serve as its next City Manager. Barre (pronounced Berry) is a full service, densely populated, resurgent community in Central Vermont.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the City's strategic planning and implementation of policies and initiatives.
  • Manage the City's budget and financial operations, ensuring fiscal responsibility and compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the City, including public safety, public works, and community services.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with community stakeholders, including residents, businesses, and non-profit organizations.
  • Represent the City in local, state, and national forums, advocating for its interests and promoting its image.
  • Ensure the City's compliance with legal requirements and ordinances, and oversee the City's legal department.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive management experience in local government or a related field.
  • A bachelor's degree in public administration, urban planning, or a related field.
  • Experience leading large-scale projects and managing teams.
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to inspire confidence and motivate staff.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations applicable to local government.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in public administration or a related field preferred.
  • Experience in economic development and community revitalization.
  • Experience with technology and digital transformation in local government.
  • Experience with grant writing and securing funding for local government projects.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range of $145,000 to $165,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
