Children Youth Programs Substitute
About the role
The Children Youth Programs Substitute will assist either the Pre-K teacher, Todds teacher, Children's Waiting Room, or Operation Hero facilitator to provide for appropriate learning experiences for students. The position involves supervising students in a variety of school-related settings.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a safe and inviting classroom environment
- Plan and implement creative, engaging, and age-appropriate lessons
- Evaluate student outcomes and communicate with parents and staff
- Supervise students in different settings
- Follow policies and procedures as outlined in the handbook
- Attend school and community events
- Meet and instruct assigned classes
- Create a classroom environment that promotes learning objectives
- Assist in implementing classroom rules and procedures
- Log work hours and maintain accurate records
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- At least 18 years old with a high school diploma
- One of the following education/experience options:
- Six credits in early childhood education (ECE) or early childhood development (ECD) and six months’ experience as a teacher
- Three credits in ECE or ECD and one-year experience as a teacher
- A national competency-based credential such as the Certified Childcare Professional® (CCP) or Child Development Associate™ (CDA) and one year of experience as a teacher
- Complete background/drug checks and comply with Virginia Department of Social Services licensing requirements
- Knowledge of curriculum and techniques for integrating curriculum, ASYMCA policies, and effective instructional practices
- Thorough understanding of the teaching and learning process
- Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education
- Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills
- CPR and First Aid certification
- Basic understanding of technology including Outlook, Word, Excel
- Valid driver’s license
- Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling
- Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks
- Must be able to lift up to 55 pounds and go up and down stairs
- Must be able to be outdoors at least 60 minutes a day
Qualifications
- Attendance and punctuality: Infrequent absences, arrives on time
- Organizational skills: Well-planned lessons, easily accessible materials, safe and inviting classroom
- Communication skills: Clear and concise explanations, active listening, clear and frequent communication with families
- Classroom management skills: Effective strategies, daily routines, managing transitions, avoiding downtime, consistent daily schedules
- Lesson planning skills: Follow developmentally appropriate lessons, flexible in planning, adjusting lessons as necessary
- Behavior management skills: System to respond to challenging behavior, positive reinforcement, redirection, establishing rules and boundaries
- Record keeping skills: Keeping track of each child's attendance
- Time management skills: Wise time management, delegating tasks, keeping the class on track

$10.00 an hour
