Children's Librarian

About the role

The Children's Librarian, Grade 23 position at the Headquarters Library is available starting March 1, 2026. The salary is $43,888 per year, including a generous benefits package. Hours are 40 per week, with specific shifts noted.

Responsibilities

• Plans, presents, and promotes creative and innovative programs that meet the needs of children
• Stays informed of the needs and interests of families and children through library patron interactions and reading of current journals, websites, and literature
• Incorporates The Basics Palmetto and Every Child Ready to Read concepts into programs and the environment for children ages 0-5
• Affixes to summer reading planning for children, birth through age twelve, for the library system
• Supports the work of the Children's Department director, assisting with special projects as needed
• Affixes to planning of school visits and field trip requests
• Tracks and submits program statistics
• Participates in maintaining an attractive department including maintaining and promoting collections, displays, and signage
• Provides superior customer service with information requests, reader’s advisory questions, computers, digital devices, and other library equipment
• Remains aware of safety and security issues and takes appropriate action as needed; roves the library to maintain awareness of patron needs and security

Requirements

• Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited ALA library school and knowledge of Children’s Services in a public library
• Essential knowledge of professional library principles, procedures, materials, and practices with public library experience
• Comprehensive knowledge of children’s literature
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Proficient with technology
• Ability to establish deadlines, monitor progress, and work well with a team
• Strong interpersonal and customer service skills

Schedule

All other weekdays 8:30 AM-5:30 PM (Note: Must be flexible to accommodate schedule changes may be asked to work other times)
