Job Responsibilities
- Develops and recommends policies and procedures for the efficient and effective management of all functions of the Children’s Services Department.
- Hires, supervises, schedules, and evaluates all Children’s Services Department personnel and recommends their dismissal, if necessary, for the good of the library.
- Orders all materials and office supplies for the Children’s Services Department within fiscal parameters and approves expenditures from the appropriate accounts.
- Compiles monthly and annual reports of the Children’s Services Department.
- Cooperates with other Department Supervisors to provide efficient library service.
- Serves as Managing Supervisor for the Library as needed by the Director.
- Participates in professional library groups such as the American Library Association and the Indiana Library Federation; attends workshops and conferences; reads selected professional periodicals to support personal professional growth and increase awareness of Willard Library's special needs and unique place within the library community.
Educational Requirements
- Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree + LC 4 Indiana State Library Certification or the Ability to Obtain a Temporary Permit while obtaining permanent certification.
Job Duties
- I. Library Department Management
- Develops and recommends policies and procedures for the efficient and effective management of all functions of the Children’s Services Department.
- Manages all services provided by the Children’s Services Department, including circulation and reference services, information delivery, interlibrary loan, and material shelving.
- Hires, supervises, schedules, and evaluates all Children’s Services Department personnel and recommends their dismissal, if necessary, for the good of the library.
- Orders all materials and office supplies for the Children’s Services Department within fiscal parameters and approves expenditures from the appropriate accounts.
- Compiles monthly and annual reports of the Children’s Services Department.
- Cooperates with other Department Supervisors to provide efficient library service.
- Serves as Managing Supervisor for the Library as needed by the Director.

- II. Collection Development
- Selects and acquires appropriate materials for the Children’s Services collections through professional reviewing sources and vendors.
- De-selects material as necessary.
- Conducts processing and basic cataloging of new adult material as needed.
- Responds to patron requests, suggestions, and complaints concerning the Children’s Services Collection.
- III. Patron Service
- Offers assistance to patrons.
- Provides extensive reference assistance to patrons in person, by telephone, or via email.
- Retains accurate statistics of reference transactions.
- Affords assistance to other staff members with complex reference transactions.
- Affords assistance with preparation and completion of interlibrary loan requests and materials.
- IV. Circulation
- Conducts routine circulation tasks; checking in and out, entering patron registrations, placing holds, updating patron files, updating bibliographic files, processing hold and overdue notifications, and shelving returned material.
- Retains accurate statistics of circulation transactions.
- Affords assistance to other staff members with complex circulation transactions.
- V. Programming and Public Relations
- Develops and implements library programs pertaining to children and those who care for children.
- Promotes such programs to the public through the media, Willard website, in-house advertising, and direct mail as needed.
- Acquires supplies and equipment needed for programs.
- Participates in community organizations and projects, particularly when such participation will increase community awareness of Willard Library's existence, programs, and services.
- Speaks to civic groups and organizations to enhance Willard Library’s profile in the community.

- Physical: Able to lift 10 lbs. above head with arms fully extended; lift and correctly shelve 100% of Children’s materials consistently; able to shelve materials on 0” – 80” high shelving, requiring the ability to bend, squat, reach above head, climb 2’ vertically, and balance on 11” diameter step stool; consistently read 10-point font from 24” away; ability to do any or all of the following as needed for up to 8 hours with no more than two 20 minute resting intervals and one 60 minute resting interval: sitting, standing, walking, using computer keyboard, reading, writing, and speaking.
- Mental: Spoken and written English language comprehension at college level; perform basic algebra including advanced knowledge of Boolean logic and searching; able to arrange Dewey decimal numbers in ascending order and correctly alphabetize; able to consistently follow and deliver at least 5 verbal or written instructions without cues or repetition.
