Child Support Specialist 1

About the Role

This is an entry-level Child Support Enforcement position designed to develop familiarity with child support laws, regulations, policies, and the programs and services of the Bureau for Child Support Enforcement (BCSE). The role includes a training period where employees perform beginning-level child support case work, including location, case development, initial notice to non-custodial parents regarding obligation, and enforcement involvement. Under close supervision, the position focuses on acquiring the knowledge and abilities needed to independently manage a caseload in child support enforcement services. Monthly evaluations and progress monitoring by supervisory staff are required.

Responsibilities

• Develop familiarity with child support laws, regulations, and agency policies.
• Process cases through location, case development, and initial notice to non-custodial parents regarding obligations.
• Locate parents, assets, and sources of income, and calculate child support using the prescribed formula.
• Research legal sources such as statutes, court opinions, rules, and regulations.
• Compile case information by reviewing public documents, interviewing customers, or gathering information from other agencies.
• Prepare case files for the BCSE Attorney.
• Perform beginning-level work in responding to customer service inquiries, including resolution of less complex case issues.
• Compose routine correspondence and maintain confidentiality of information.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• OR successful completion of a paralegal or legal secretarial training program (substitutes for two years of the required training).
• OR full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in one of the following areas:
  • Legal setting performing legal research, interpreting laws, preparing legal documents, or assisting in case file preparation under attorney supervision.
  • Debt collections, credit investigations, criminal investigations, law enforcement, accounting, or auditing.
  • Economic Service Worker or Family Support Specialist.
• One year of experience may substitute for every thirty semester hours of training.
• Valid driver’s license and availability of a vehicle for continuous use may be required.
