About the Role

The Chief Litigation Counsel advises and performs legal work in connection with dockets filed at the Commission and coordinates this work with the Utilities, Conservation or Transportation Division Directors and their staff. Work includes evaluating issues and facilitating formulation of staff positions; coordinating preparation of testimony; preparing pleadings, motions and briefs; providing representation in dockets. This further includes directing a staff of legal and clerical employees engaged in performing various legal and related activities; direct and supervise the work of subordinate attorneys and is responsible for all legal activity of staff attorneys and special counsel in cases before the Commission.

Responsibilities

• Advise and perform legal work related to dockets filed at the Commission.
• Coordinate legal work with Utilities, Conservation, or Transportation Division Directors and their staff.
• Evaluate issues and facilitate formulation of staff positions.
• Coordinate preparation of testimony; prepare pleadings, motions, and briefs.
• Provide representation in dockets.
• Direct and supervise a staff of legal and clerical employees.
• Oversee all legal activity of staff attorneys and special counsel in cases before the Commission.

Requirements

• Degree from an accredited law school.
• Licensed and in good standing with the Supreme Court of Kansas at the time of appointment.
• At least five (5) years of experience in professional legal work, including experience in litigation, governmental, or administrative law setting.
• Qualified for admission to practice before the US District Court for the District of Kansas.
• Excellent communication and writing skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience.
• Professional experience with the core industries regulated by the KCC: public utilities, oil and gas production, and commercial motor carriers.

Pay

$100,000 - $130,000. Salary can vary depending upon education, experience, or qualifications.
