About the Role

The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) has a vacancy for an unclassified Litigation Counsel position in the Conservation Division, located in Wichita. The KCC regulates public utilities (electric, natural gas, telecommunication, and water companies), motor carriers, oil and gas pipelines, and oil and gas production activities. The Commission’s headquarters is in Topeka, with the central Conservation office in Wichita and district offices in Dodge City, Chanute, and Hays.

Responsibilities

  • Advise the Commission’s technical staff on jurisdictional regulation of the oil and gas industry.
  • Evaluate issues and facilitate formulation of technical staff positions.
  • Coordinate preparation of testimony; prepare pleadings, motions, and briefs.
  • Review discovery; represent the Commission in hearings and pre-hearing conferences, including oral arguments and examination of witnesses.
  • Provide legal advice and assistance on procedures, rules, regulations, legislative initiatives, and operations, including drafting or reviewing memoranda, opinions, contracts, and other documents.
  • Maintain a full docket load.

Requirements

  • Degree from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed and in good standing with the Supreme Court of Kansas at the time of appointment.
  • Qualified for admission to practice before the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas.
  • Excellent research, communication, and writing skills.

Preference given to applicants with at least three (3) years of professional legal experience, including litigation, government, or administrative law. Recent graduates will be considered.

Pay

$75,000 - $90,000 annually. Salary varies based on education, experience, or qualifications.

Schedule

Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

Veterans' Preference Eligible: Yes. Post-offer/pre-employment requirement: Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate required.
