Chief Legal Counsel - Office of the Secretary

About the role

This position is located in Topeka, Kansas and is supervised by the Secretary of Wildlife and Parks. This position is accepting applications until August 2, 2026.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide on-demand legal services and staff supervision
• Management of 185 regulations
• Claims and litigation management
• Point of contact for the Governor's office, NGOs and constituents
• Provide recommendations for legislative changes, provide legislative testimony
• Manage preventative law program
• Ensure compliance with KOMA, and review and KORA requests
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

• Juris Doctor from accredited school of law
• Five years of progressive experience in the practice of governmental or conservation law
• Certificate of admission to the Bar of the Supreme Court of Kansas or temporary permit to practice law issued by the Supreme Court of Kansas
• The successful candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and pass a background check
• Candidates must be licensed and in good standing with a state bar and must be licensed, or willing and eligible to become licensed, to practice law in the State of Kansas

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working as a licensed attorney practicing administrative, governmental or conservation law and/or experience with natural resources regulations
