Chief Engineer

Responsibilities

• Perform attentive and professional watch standing as ordered by the Master.
• Monitor all work on the vessel’s machinery in accordance with relevant rules, regulations, policies, and procedures, using safe work practices.
• Conduct corrective and preventive maintenance through scheduled inspections of all engine room and machinery spaces.
• Monitor the use of proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by the engine room crew and others entering machinery and engine spaces.
• Oversee the transfer of fuel, lubricants, ballast, and potable water.
• Oversee all bilge discharges.
• Ensure proper completion of a Declaration of Inspection before transferring fuel, hazardous material, or lubricants to the vessel.
• Maintain and record accurate records of fuel and lubricants through soundings and fuel tickets.
• Keep inventory, order, receive, and stow engine room stores and tools.
• Prevent unauthorized access to all machinery spaces.
• Verify that any hot work performed uses an approved Hot Work Permit.
• Work with vendors or subcontractors hired for vessel repairs, ensuring their compliance with the Company’s safety and environmental policies.
• Track vendor hours on board and ensure vendor invoice tickets reflect actual hours worked before signing or recommending to the Master.
• Maintain all necessary logs, records, and documentation of inspection and maintenance performed aboard the vessel.
• Ensure proper Pre-Task Planning is performed before starting work.
• Familiarize yourself with all details of emergency plans, stations, and procedures.
• Perform duties in a professional, seaman-like manner while promoting the highest safety and environmental standards.

Upon joining the vessel, the oncoming Engineer/Oiler will conduct a thorough inspection and examination of the engine room spaces, systems, and all equipment, noting the overall condition of the vessel, main engines, and power generating systems. Review the progress of repairs, maintenance, and the status of consumable items. Examine the Engineer’s Handover File to ensure all correspondence, logs, and record books are current before assuming control.

All physical requirements must meet USCG Physical Requirements as determined in NVIC 04-08.
