Chief Engineer
About the Role

The Chief Engineer directs all aspects of engineering operations including emergency programs, energy management, asset protection, preventive maintenance, and repairs to equipment, structures, and grounds. This role oversees the Engineering staff, accounting/budgeting, asset protection, inventory control, and human resources, ensuring alignment with the General Manager, Company, brand standards, and local, state, and national regulations. The Chief Engineer is responsible for quality service, meeting or exceeding financial goals, short- and long-term planning, and day-to-day operations, while recommending and managing the Engineering budget, business plan, and capital expenditures.
Responsibilities
- Direct all facets of Engineering operations, including emergency programs, energy management, asset protection, preventive maintenance, and repairs.
- Keep abreast of brand standards and competitive products to improve revenues, profit margins, and quality.
- Use business and management knowledge to provide leadership and position the hotel as a market leader.
- Implement, manage, and comply with Company policies, practices, and programs.
- Ensure compliance with brand standards and local, state, and national regulations.
- Maintain optimal levels of quality service and hospitality for guests.
- Conduct daily property walks to identify issues and engage with associates.
- Ensure preventative maintenance programs are in place and maintenance issues are promptly addressed.
- Inspect and evaluate the condition of Engineering areas, equipment, and inventories.
- Investigate, analyze, and report on all incidents and accidents.
- Coordinate with local and federal agencies, fire companies, and insurance agencies to ensure a safe environment.
- Generate cost comparisons and solicit bids/proposals as needed.
- Submit recommendations for improvements to the General Manager.
- Direct all emergency programs, including equipment maintenance, staff training, drills, and compliance with policies and regulations.
- Promote an accident prevention program to minimize liabilities and related expenses.
- Ensure sanitary, safety, security, and emergency procedures are followed and comply with regulations.
- Train staff in the use and maintenance of Company assets.
- Communicate with department heads to address maintenance needs and ensure timely responses.
- Assign, instruct, and observe direct reports to encourage improvement and adjust staffing as needed.
- Supervise costs, inventory, and conduct disciplinary actions as required.
- Conduct 90-day and annual performance evaluations for the engineering staff.
- Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction and build long-term customer relationships.
- Coordinate and communicate with internal and external customers, following up on feedback.
- Respond to and resolve guest problems and complaints.
- Review guest service results and implement corrective action plans.
- Demonstrate commitment to Driftwood Hospitality’s operating principles and hold self and others accountable for results.
- Address conflicts in a timely manner and contribute to team results.
- Conduct one-on-one meetings with direct reports to ensure ongoing development.
- Maintain open communication channels across all levels of the organization.
- Ensure all required licenses, permits, contracts, and insurance are in proper order.
- Submit all corporate, divisional, and governmental reports as required.
- Perform daily property inspections to identify areas needing improvement.
- Hire, develop, and retain top talent, utilizing brand interviewing tools and succession planning.
- Manage employee progressive discipline procedures and ensure fair administration of policies.
- Establish open, collaborative relationships and actively solicit employee feedback.
- Celebrate successes and publicly recognize team contributions.
- Actively pursue learning and self-development to enhance personal, professional, and business growth.
- Maintain a professional and positive attitude in all communications and interactions.
- Conduct regularly scheduled meetings with the Engineering staff to share updates and educate associates.
