About the role

The role of a checker at Hy-Vee involves providing fast and friendly service to customers in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment. The primary responsibility is to assist customers, operate a cash register, package products, and handle various tasks to enhance the shopping experience.

Responsibilities

• Provides prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service by greeting customers, learning their names, and addressing them by name.
• Escorts customers to products, secures items, loads/unloads heavy items, and passes along customer suggestions or requests.
• Answers the telephone and provides friendly, helpful service to customers.
• Works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment.
• Operates cash register accurately, scans products, redeems coupons, handles credit card transactions, and counts change.
• Plants merchandise in bags or boxes, gives packages to customers, and assists courtesy personnel as needed.
• Answers customer questions and concerns and follows up with appropriate personnel.
• Understands and follows local, state, and company policies on sales of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets.
• Stocks, faces, rotates merchandise, cleans shelves, and maintains cleanliness of the work area.
• Maintains strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress.
• Reports to work when scheduled and on time.

Qualifications

No formal education or experience is required. The position requires the ability to carry up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 10 pounds of force constantly. Physical requirements include the ability to perform tasks such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. The position is frequently exposed to temperature extremes and possible dampness, and there are possible equipment movement hazards from a pallet jack, electrical shock, and exposure to chemicals and solvents.
