About the role

The role of a checker at Hy-Vee involves providing fast and friendly service to customers, assisting them with their shopping needs, and operating a cash register. The position requires a positive attitude, strong communication skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment.

Responsibilities

• Provides prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service
• Greets customers and addresses them by name
• Escorts customers to products, secures items, loads/unloads heavy items, and passes along customer suggestions or requests
• Answers the telephone and provides friendly, helpful service
• Operates cash register, scans product, handles coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, and issues rain checks
• Plants merchandise in bags or boxes, assists with packaging, and gives packages to customers
• Answers customer questions and concerns, and follows-up with appropriate personnel
• Ensures compliance with local, state, and company policies on sales of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets
• Stocks, faces, rotates merchandise, cleans shelves, and understands shelf tags
• Communicates clearly and distinctly on the intercom or telephone system
• Reviews weekly store ad to note price changes and sale items
• Keeps register area clean, ensures adequate supplies are ready and available, and reports improper cash levels in cash drawer
• Compares totals on cash register with amount of currency in register to verify balances at the beginning and end of work shift
• Maintains strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress
• Reports to work when scheduled and on time

Requirements

• Must be able to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or verbal instructions
• Must have the ability to do arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages
• Must have the ability to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions
• Must be able to write identifying information
• Must be able to perform the following physical activities: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions

Qualifications

• No formal education or experience requirements
• Must be physically able to exert up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
• Must be able to perform the following physical activities: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
• Must be able to perform the following visual activities: vision from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet with or without correction, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision
• Must be able to perform the following physical activities: performing the following physical activities: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
