About the role

The Spiritual Care Chaplain uses theological and clinical training to help patients and families draw upon their beliefs, values, and spiritual practices as coping resources. Chaplaincy care is grounded in initiating, developing, deepening, and appropriately concluding mutually empathetic relationships with patients, families, caregivers, and staff. The chaplain functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary team and works in accordance with the missions and vision of the Hospital, Chaplaincy, and Palliative Care programs.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates competency in serving as a liaison between the hospital and community clergy, lay ministers, congregations, and other faith-based resources.
• Utilizes appropriate spiritual and religious community resources and serves as a liaison between Wentworth-Douglass Hospital (WDH) and community clergy directly involved with the patient and/or family.
• Demonstrates competency in assessing the spiritual needs of patients and families and providing appropriate spiritual care.
• Conducts independent visits with patients and families, as well as joint visits with clinicians when appropriate and beneficial.
• Provides chaplaincy services to patients and families throughout the continuum of care to optimize quality of life by anticipating, preventing, and addressing spiritual, emotional, and existential suffering.
• Participates in family meetings as appropriate and when requested.
• Provides timely and appropriate documentation in the patient's medical record.
• Presents and discusses clinical and pastoral work in formal and informal settings.
• Formulates and utilizes spiritual assessments, interventions, outcomes, and care plans to contribute effectively to the well-being of patients and families.
• Provides spiritual counseling and support, including crisis intervention, to address the psycho-spiritual, religious, and existential needs of patients and families in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team (IDT).
• Maintains a consistent and appropriate spiritual presence within the hospital.
• Functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary team, including the Palliative Care team.
• Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams with a focus on the needs of patients and families.
• Provides chaplaincy services addressing personal, spiritual, emotional, psychosocial, religious, and existential concerns.
• Provides consultation and education to healthcare team members regarding patient and family needs and management, as appropriate.
• Participates in supervision appropriate to the level of professional development.
• Serves as a mentor and/or training resource for less experienced staff.
• Supports an environment that encourages the sharing of ideas, collaboration, and constructive feedback.
• Seeks opportunities for professional development and establishes goals for continued growth.

Requirements

• Master's degree in Theology, Philosophy, Psychology, or a related field (minimum required).
• Four or more units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) (minimum required).
• Additional units of CPE (preferred/desired).
• Commission, endorsement, or authorization to function in a ministerial capacity by a recognized faith group for ministry in a specialized healthcare setting (minimum required).
• Board certification (or Board Eligible) through a recognized chaplaincy organization, such as APC, NACC, or NAJC (minimum required).

Pay

Hourly pay range: $25.15 - $36.63 (based on experience). Annual pay range: $52,312.00 - $76,180.00.
