About the role

The Night Chaplain (9:30 pm to 6:30am) position at Houston Methodist Baytown Hospital is responsible for providing spiritual care to meet the spiritual, religious, and emotional needs of patients and their family members. This role also supports Houston Methodist employees, visitors, and physicians, conducting spiritual care visits and assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Provide spiritual care support to patients and their families, including conducting assessments and follow-up care.
  • Work independently to identify and address changes in patient care plans, collaborating with others as needed.
  • Collaborate with the patient care team and assist leadership in achieving department and organizational goals.
  • Facilitate a supportive environment for patients, family members, visitors, employees, and physicians.
  • Assist in planning and carrying out the hospital's mission, vision, and values.
  • Engage with community clergy and local congregations to meet the spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Offer crisis intervention and recommend initiatives to improve patient satisfaction measures.
  • Participate in interprofessional health team rounds and consult with physicians and hospital leadership to ensure quality and safety of services.
  • Document patient visits and spiritual care provided accurately and thoroughly in the patient's record.
  • Manage time effectively, prioritizing daily tasks to achieve maximum results in a timely manner.
  • Represent the hospital in community activities and participate in various department and hospital-wide activities.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in theology or related studies from an accredited institution.
  • Four units of clinical pastoral education (CPE).
  • One of the following certifications within 3 years of hire/transfer: BCCI, NAJC, NACC, NAVAC, APC, SCA, ACPE, or CASC.

  • Demonstrated skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job.
  • Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers.
  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language.
  • Basic computer knowledge and proficiency in operating various computer systems.
  • Sound judgment and ability to handle challenging/difficult interactions.
  • Strong interpersonal and team player skills.
  • Adaptability to multiple priorities and problem-solving abilities.
  • Professional handling of confidential/sensitive information.
