Job Summary
Provides for the spiritual needs of patients and families.
Essential Functions
- Maintain spiritual and emotional needs of patients through initial and ongoing assessments.
- Provide pastoral crisis counseling and make referrals as necessary.
- Support and comfort bereaved families and anxious patients.
- Facilitate grief and oncology support groups.
- Communicate with hospital staff regarding patient needs.
- Act as a liaison between family members and staff during difficult times.
- Assist the family upon the death of a patient.
- Participate in general and specific orientation programs for nursing staff and interns.
- Attend family conferences and medical ethics discussions.
- Log significant or crisis-related events during the night shift.
- Participate in staff reports, case conferences, and rounds.
- Participate in departmental committees and report daily activities.
- Seek out and participate in professional development opportunities.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Able to work effectively as a team member with healthcare professionals and patients.
- Possesses theological and psychological training to relate effectively with diverse individuals.
- Able to listen accurately and respond warmly and appropriately with mature judgment.
- Able to operate under pressure and cope with stressful situations.
- Able to work in a flexible schedule.
- Demonstrates a meaningful concern for the feelings and concerns of all people and maintains confidentiality.
Qualifications
- Master of Divinity degree in theology or equivalent.
- Successful completion of four quarters of Clinical Pastoral Education in an accredited program.
- Certification by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains or the College of Chaplains.
- One year of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) under an approved supervisor.
