Position Summary

Provides spiritual care to meet the spiritual, religious, emotional and psychological needs of selected Palliative Care patients and families of all faiths and backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Affirms and documents the spiritual needs of selected Palliative Care patients and their families and documents in the chaplaincy needs assessment.
  • Identifies caregiver burden for spiritual and emotional needs.
  • Performs spiritual rounding on selected Palliative Care patients, providing spiritual counseling to patients and families as needed.
  • Attends team meetings and participates in interdisciplinary review of the plan of care for patients and their families.
  • Serves as a liaison to the patient/family/community clergy in response to the needs, wishes and beliefs of the patient.
  • Supports spiritual/emotional needs of staff during crises as part of the Palliative Care team.
  • Potential for community home visits to provide spiritual care, meeting the spiritual, religious, emotional and psychological needs of selected Palliative Care patients of all faiths and backgrounds.

Required Experience And Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in theology, spiritual counseling or related field.
  • Knowledge of a large variety of faith bases/spiritual backgrounds, cultural competence and awareness.
  • Ability to work as member of interdisciplinary group.
  • Ability to accept different lifestyles, cultures, beliefs, and values.
  • Ability to network with community clergy.
  • Eligible for board certification (if not already certified) with a chaplaincy certifying body such as Spiritual Care Association, Association of Professional Chaplains.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to Palliative Care/ Hospice philosophy of care.

Preferred Experience And Qualifications

  • Master's degree.
  • Experience/Training: Palliative Care/hospice chaplaincy experience.
