Pay

Hourly pay range: $36.83 – $53.23. Actual pay rate and pay grade will depend on factors such as years of experience, unique skills and abilities, education, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, and employer business practices.

What You Will Do

Provide spiritual care and counseling services for patients, families, and team members of Sharp HealthCare that respects diversity and differences, including culture, gender expressions, sexual orientation, and spiritual/religious practices. Provide on-call services as needed. If based at Sharp Memorial, provide spiritual care support to all of Sharp Metropolitan Medical Campus, including Sharp Memorial Hospital, Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns, and Sharp Mesa Vista.

  • Assessments: Assess, formulate, and utilize spiritual assessments, interventions, outcomes, and care plans to contribute effectively to the well-being of the person receiving care. Document assessments within the chaplain’s shift (Hospice: within 5 days).
  • Clinical Skills: Deliver individual and group spiritual care for patients, families, and staff in clinically designated areas. Provide crisis intervention as necessary (e.g., Code Blue, trauma code). Address bioethical issues, organ donation, preparation of advance healthcare directives, and facilitate treatment decisions based on patient values. Provide rituals/services for patients and families, including newborn rituals (hospital only), end-of-life rituals, memorial services, and other rituals that celebrate, comfort, and encourage staff.
  • Caseload: Set daily priorities for the shift and revise schedules based on patient/family needs. Communicate priorities with spiritual care staff. Establish visit frequencies for ongoing patient care with specific timeframes.
  • Customer Service: Communicate positively and timely with staff, Sharp employees, physicians, patients, and visitors. Maintain positive relationships with community clergy, CPE students, and volunteers (may include orientation, scheduling, and supervision). Handle problems professionally and proactively.
  • Documentation: Document all spiritual care visits in the appropriate Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and other required departmental documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Required:
    • Bachelor’s degree.
    • Successful completion of at least 4 units of ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education (Hospice requirement: 1 unit of CPE).
  • Preferred:
    • Master’s degree in Divinity or related field (equivalent needed for Board Certification by endorsing faith group).
    • 1 year of experience as a healthcare chaplain.
    • Experience in acute care hospital.
    • Board Certification by either APC or NACC, or eligibility and active pursuit of certification.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a collegial department and multidisciplinary setting.
  • Excellent clinical skills and proven ability to minister effectively with persons of diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.
  • Excellent teaching skills (may involve in-services, presentations, and other work).
  • Ability to initiate new programs and organize/oversee existing ones.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, Microsoft Office applications, and electronic medical records.
  • Basic understanding of medical terms and diagnosis.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
