Chaplain - Full Time, Days

NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center providing care to residents of eastern Long Island. The facility includes the Knapp Cardiac Care Center, a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion with specialized services such as women's imaging, a sleep laboratory, and bariatric surgery. It also features a Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center, a Primary Stroke Center designated by the New York State Department of Health, and multiple outpatient sites including a wound care center, hemodialysis center, and various primary care and specialty offices.

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Chaplain to join our team full-time (Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM). In this role, the successful candidate will provide spiritual care to patients, their loved ones, and staff using an interfaith model, working within each patient's belief and value system.

Responsibilities

• Assess patient and family spiritual needs and assist them in using their spiritual resources to cope with illness, trauma, and stress.
• Facilitate additional spiritual or religious support from community religious leaders, including specific sacramental or religious needs.
• Develop a plan of care and provide spiritual and emotional support through listening, presence, prayer, reading sacred texts, ethical guidance, and sacraments.
• Advise the manager of important patient or clinical issues as they arise.
• Respond to codes and traumas when designated as the on-call chaplain.
• Promote an interdisciplinary approach to spiritual care among all chaplains and participate in interdisciplinary rounds when possible.
• Maintain positive working relationships between the Pastoral Care Department and medical, nursing, and other departments.
• Serve on institutional committees as appointed.
• Provide support to staff, either individually or through institutional events such as Nurses Week or after traumatic events.
• Document all chaplaincy activities in a timely manner according to department protocols.
• Complete administrative tasks as assigned, with an expectation of computer literacy and adherence to institutional policy.
• Plan and lead worship opportunities, including interfaith memorial services, as assigned.
• Lead bereavement and spirituality study or support groups as assigned.
• Participate in the department’s continuous quality improvement plan.
• Ensure a safe environment and effective communication with all age groups served by the Pastoral Care Department.
• Adhere to the Standards of Practice of the Association of Professional Chaplains and the principles of Outcome-Oriented Chaplaincy.
• Reflect the mission and vision of the institution in all functions.
• Mentor CPE students and volunteers as assigned.
• Contribute to the wider community through publication, teaching, and research.
• Participate in teaching or lecturing on a regular or periodic basis as invited.
• Engage in regular professional development activities and supervision.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Master of Divinity degree, Master of Arts in Religion, or Master of Pastoral Counseling from an accredited school of theology, or ordination.
• Successful completion of at least 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
• 1–2 years of clergy or chaplain experience.

Pay

The salary range for this role is $66,300.00 – $76,902.52 annually. Actual salaries depend on factors such as experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. This range does not include bonuses, incentive pay, differential pay, or other forms of compensation or benefits.
