About the role

This is a full-time position as an employee of Kranz Consulting, while providing fractional/interim CFO consulting services to our clients. The role reports to the Emerging Growth Practice Leader and requires a seasoned professional with excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, coupled with demonstrated CFO experience in Finance & Accounting consulting. The ideal candidate will be comfortable generating new business through cultivating existing relationships and developing new ones, as well as cross-selling other firm services including Technical Accounting and VC Fund Administration. A key aspect of the role is promoting a culture of collaboration and mentorship to junior staff.

Utilization goal: 65-70% billable (on average) while spending time on business development activities.

Responsibilities

  • Act as primary contact with clients on consulting engagements.
  • Manage client financial functions, including accounting, finance, treasury, and systems.
  • Prospect new business development opportunities and attend client meetings to architect solutions based on client needs.
  • Assist with onboarding new clients and provide quality assurance for internal Kranz work-product prior to client delivery.
  • Engage and coordinate with specialist resources (tax, legal, benefits, etc.).

Accounting

  • Oversee the accounting team on all accounting matters, ensuring timely and accurate accounting close and consolidations.
  • Drive compliance and efficiency across accounting, controllership, and month-end close functions.
  • Direct the development of and communicate policies to ensure adherence to GAAP, including a roadmap for transitioning from modified to full GAAP.
  • Prepare, maintain, report, and present all financial statements, including supporting reconciliations, footnotes, and disclosures (e.g., debts/warrants, inventory, COGS).
  • Develop and maintain thorough knowledge of accounting policies, financial systems, transaction processes, internal controls, and chart of accounts.
  • Review journal entries for complex accounting areas with explanations.
  • Review account analyses and monthly analytical reviews of balance sheets and income statements.
  • Ensure timely billing and invoicing of all revenue, compliant with revenue recognition policies (ASC 606, ASC 605).
  • Ensure lease accounting compliance with ASC 842.
  • Manage local, state, federal, and international government reporting, including sales and use tax, state tax registrations, and franchise tax filings.
  • Prepare and present financial information to Investors and Audit Committees as necessary.
  • Research and resolve complex accounting issues while balancing client-preferred solutions.
  • Clearly communicate US GAAP requirements and current diversity of practice for modified GAAP among early-stage companies.

Finance

  • Provide analytical support and business guidance to the client’s Leadership Team on key strategic decisions.
  • Identify key risks and opportunities affecting the company’s financial results and make recommendations.
  • Develop key metrics and dashboards, including experience with SaaS revenue models.
  • Drive improvement in key business metrics alongside the client’s Leadership Team.
  • Assist in the preparation of and monitor performance against the company’s budget, rolling forecasts, and business plan.
  • Partner with business leads to understand and explain financial variances in plans and forecasts.
  • Ensure timely reporting of monthly financial information for executive staff, stakeholders, and the Board of Directors.
  • Prepare detailed analyses, summaries, and reports of financial data on the company’s operating progress.
  • Provide financial support and leadership in fundraising, transactions, liquidity events, and other strategic financial activities.
  • Design and/or maintain processes and systems to ensure robustness and accuracy of data for Reporting and Analytics.
  • Lead Investor reporting.

Treasury

  • Manage cash records, ensure proper reconciliation of all cash accounts with banks, and project future cash forecasts.
  • Provide oversight of effective client internal controls.
  • Monitor all subsidiary ledgers for customer activities and ensure timely collection.
  • Manage foreign currencies, including functional/local currency analysis/elections and risk management derivatives.
  • Develop and maintain banking relationships.
  • Manage the company’s compliance with local and federal regulatory matters.
  • Maintain adequate debt coverage in support of the company’s needs and plan.
  • Maintain proper insurance coverages and review major contracts/subcontracts for completeness and risk management issues.
  • Review all contracts with customers and vendors for consistency and compliance with company policies and accounting requirements.
  • Remain current in federal and multiple state tax laws.
  • Maintain the company’s stock register and ensure proper recording of all equity activity in the balance sheet.
  • Ensure tax compliance with the issuance of ISO’s/NSO’s for stock-based equity transactions and timely completion of 409A valuation reports.

Business Development & Client Management

  • Responsible for business development, architecting solutions for potential clients, and onboarding new clients based on approved proposals.
  • Manage various client accounting systems and their integration with other key business systems to support growth, in partnership with Information Technology.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree; MBA or CPA preferred.
  • Consulting experience preferred; large accounting firm experience preferred.
  • Proven experience in a CFO-level role in a for-profit company.
  • Minimum of 10 years of accounting and finance experience, with 5 years of managerial experience leading accounting teams in a global company, including 3+ years at a public company.
  • International accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience working with fast-growth, rapidly changing, fast-paced companies with multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and current revenue recognition & financial reporting trends.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft and Google suites; experience with complex accounting systems.
  • Prior ERP implementation experience highly preferred.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
  • Outstanding communication skills and ability to see the big picture while anticipating business issues.
  • Experience negotiating contracts with suppliers and customers, including software license agreements and purchase agreements.
  • Demonstrated experience managing day-to-day aspects of consulting, client relationships, and projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership and effective management in a growing professional services organization.
  • Ability to operate in high-pressure, fast-paced environments and adapt to unexpected changes in timelines, deadlines, and scope of work.
  • Experience across a wide variety of industries.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead people and develop successful work teams.
  • High-level integrity, creativity, good business judgment, and ability to quickly gain the respect of senior management.
