Certified Rigger Journeyman
About the role
The role involves setting up rigging for construction projects and manufacturing plants. Responsibilities include reading and interpreting project plans, blueprints, and instructions; inspecting rigging equipment; attaching slings and moving materials; guiding loads during lifts; and performing daily safety checks.
Responsibilities
- Maintain proper hand signals for communication with equipment operators.
- Read and interpret project plans, blueprints, and other written instructions.
- Use measuring tools such as tape measure, speed square, framing square, etc.
- Inspect rigging equipment for wear, damage, or deterioration before use.
- Attach slings, chokers, spreader bars, etc., to materials to be moved.
- Attach rigging and move materials, equipment, parts, or assemblies into position using hoists, chain falls, snatch blocks, or come alongs.
- Guide loads during lifts and position them according to instructions.
- Signal equipment operators during lifts for directional or placement instructions.
- Climb structures to guide and position loads.
- Assist in connecting or stabilizing loads prior to detaching them from equipment.
- Detach loads and remove rigging equipment.
- Place and remove outrigger pads from cranes and other heavy equipment.
- Complete necessary documentation, reporting, and limited office duties.
- Respond appropriately to safety hazards and warning devices.
- Work under production schedule pressure and attain set standards of accuracy.
- Communicate with foremen regarding any problems, materials required, or hazards noted.
- Support project with other tasks as directed by supervision.
- Work in other crafts at levels appropriate to training and skills as requested by project supervision.
- Take direction from higher skilled workers or foremen.

Qualifications
- 4+ years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A high school diploma or GED certification (preferred).
- Applicable rigger training and certificate from NCCER, NCCCO, or from approved third-party certification body.
- Knowledgeable of MIC Health and Safety programs and project-specific regulations.
- Active participation in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Basic knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with units of weight measurement and volume.
- Common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
- Ability to work within precise standards of accuracy and follow set procedures and standards.
- Knowledge of equipment safety, maintenance, and storage.
- Knowledge of manufacturers' load charts and how to interpret them.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work with limited supervision.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently to understand equipment load charts, prepare written orders, read safety topics, etc.
Physical Demands
- Up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical work in varying temperatures and outside conditions.
- Maintain physical strength and stamina; use arms, hands, and legs fully; push, pull, and frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Straighten, kneel, balance, crouch, crawl, and climb to perform job tasks.
- Stamina to perform this task repetitively and continuously for several hour intervals.
- Uncontrollable environmental conditions: constant change in weather and site conditions.
- Moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and loud noises.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment is required (including but not limited to- safety toe boots, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, vest, etc.).
- Move in and around confined, cluttered, and uneven areas.
- May need to work at heights and must be able to abide by all safety and fall-protection requirements; must be able to wear and utilize all safety equipment required for work at heights.
- Evaluate information based on measurable standards; visualize objects in three dimensions from drawings.
- Keep good balance and work at heights.
- See well (either naturally or with correction).
- Hear well (either naturally or with correction).
- Coordinate the use of eyes, hands, and feet.
Hours
This position is a Full-Time position scheduled to work typically 50 hours per week. Schedule is subject to projects requirements.
Travel
Travel required up to 90%.
