Certified Phlebotomy Tech

Department: Clinical Lab • Facility: St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital • Location: Chicago, IL 60622

Schedule

Day shift: 5:30 am–2:00 pm (primary shift) and/or 9:00 am–5:30 pm with rotating holidays and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Perform skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages to obtain blood specimens for laboratory analysis under the supervision of the Laboratory Director/Manager/Supervisor.
• Perform computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties.
• Demonstrate knowledge of laboratory test terminology.
• Exhibit good communication skills and telephone etiquette when greeting patients and visitors.
• Apply proper phlebotomy techniques and use equipment for collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients.
• Process specimens for microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank.
• Process specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
• Stock and order routine supplies.
• Maintain cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas.
• Process or load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation following established policies and procedures.
• Pick up samples at hospital/OR, assist lab specialty in sorting samples, put away samples, assist pathology, manage inventory, replenish supplies, order supplies, handle mail pickup/delivery, faxing, answering phones, and product deliveries.
• May work across multiple departments or night/graveyard shifts.
• May be delegated as a Phlebotomy Lead.
• Perform other tasks or responsibilities as assigned by the department manager/director.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program or equivalent on-the-job training with documented competency.
• Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician.
• BLS certification within forty-five days of hire and maintained current.
• Minimum of one year of clinical laboratory experience preferred.

Pay

A reasonable compensation estimate for this role is $17.33 to $25.09 per hour. The exact starting compensation will be determined based on skillset, years of applicable experience, education, credentials, and licensure.
