About the role
This position provides routine patient care to promote patient comfort and contribute to the overall patient plan of care. Responsibilities include on-going patient data collection and documentation in medical records, as well as providing unit support functions to ensure efficient operation of the nursing unit/department.
As a Certified Patient Care Assistant (CPCA) in the Progressive Care Unit (PCU) at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, you will help provide basic nursing assistance to high-acuity PCU patients across multiple specialized units:

- 4th Floor – Neuro/Stroke and Trauma Progressive Care Unit (PCU): Specializes in Neuro and Trauma but also treats multisystem complex patients. The Neuro population includes severe brain injuries (TBI, brain bleeds, falls), stroke, seizures, brain tumors, and pre/post-op neurosurgery. Patients are highly acute, often with limited mobility, requiring a collaborative approach.
- 5th Floor – Cardiac Progressive Care Unit (PCU): Focuses on heart failure, renal failure, COPD, and interventional cardiac care for complex acutely ill patients.
- 6th Floor – General Progressive Care Unit (PCU): A 40-bed general Medical PCU floor with a wide variety of patients, including vascular, cardio-thoracic surgical, heart failure, Neuro, and respiratory. Patients may come from the ICU, be upgraded from other floors due to acuity changes, or be admitted from the ED.
The PCU model supports learning at all levels and fosters a collaborative environment between nursing, physicians, and therapies.
