About the role
As a Patient Care Assistant in Outpatient Observation at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, you will help provide basic nursing assistance to patients. Our Outpatient Observation team oversees about 50% of patients from the ER who are not quite ready to return home but do not need to be inpatient. This fast-paced, quick patient turnover environment is a great steppingstone for those looking to gain experience and grow into the ED, PCU, and other acute areas of the hospital.
Responsibilities
- Provides assistance in activities of daily living, including basic hygiene, mobility, and nutritional intake.
- Collects patient specimens and data, such as vital signs, input/output, and other delegated measurements.
- Documents objective data and routine aspects of patient care.
- Assists in the transportation of patient specimens.
- Recognizes and reports abnormalities and/or changes in patient health status to a licensed professional.
- Promotes continuity of care by communicating patient status to other caregivers.
- Performs procedures and uses equipment as delegated by a licensed professional (e.g., blood draws, foley catheter removal, EKGs, EKG monitoring).
- Provides supplies, support, and assistance for unit-specific procedures under direct supervision.
- Performs receptionist/clerical duties to support department efficiency and communication flow.
- Participates in resolving customer problems or escalates issues appropriately.
- Maintains complete and accurate patient records, including admission, transfer, and discharge information.
- Ensures all reports and forms are scanned or filed into patient records.
- Maintains adequate supplies of patient education materials, office, dietary, and medical supplies.
- Assists in ordering patient specimens and reconciles supply orders upon delivery.
- Monitors and tracks electronic equipment (e.g., patient ID scanners, laptops).
- May assist with transporting patients, including pre-operative and post-operative patients.
- Participates in OR room turnover (if applicable).
Requirements
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
- Current BLS certification.
- Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in state of practice (required for new hires and transfers).
- 1 year of medical clerical experience (preferably in a hospital or physician office setting) or prior customer service experience.
- Excellent organizational, human relations, and communication skills.
- Working knowledge of medical terminology and computer literacy/keyboarding skills.
- Depending on department assignment, must pass an ECG or EEG test with a minimum score of 85% (identifying lethal cardiac dysrhythmias and epileptiform activity).
- Successful completion of a unit-approved basic electrocardiogram or electroencephalographic interpretation course, or on-the-job training.
- Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card required for employees at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital, BTMC Behavioral, BUMG, BUMCT, BUMCS (for pediatric behavioral health settings), Banner Home Care/Hospice, Boswell Skilled Nursing Facility, or Banner MD Anderson (Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card).
Preferred Qualifications
- Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) licensure in Arizona.
- Recent healthcare experience.
- Successful completion of an approved unit secretary program.
Schedule
- Full-time day shifts available (3-12 hour shifts per week, 6:00 AM – 6:30 PM).
- Self-scheduling tool available for shift and weekend coverage.
- No set scheduled days each week; weekend and holiday rotations required.
- Flat rate $1/hour weekend shift differential and 18% night shift differential (when applicable).
Pay
Sign-on bonus of $3000 available for new hires (12-month commitment required).
