About the role

As a Patient Care Assistant in our Telemetry unit focused on Observation status patients, you will be part of a demanding environment with a wide variety of patient illnesses. This area features a dynamic similar to the ED, with the diagnostic work-ups and care needs of the Telemetry setting. You may potentially float to other inpatient units as needed. Daily responsibilities include ongoing patient data collection, documentation in medical records, and providing unit support functions to contribute to the efficient operation of the nursing unit. You will work closely with physicians, case management, and experienced nurses, fostering strong team collaboration in a fast-paced, 24-bed unit.

Responsibilities

• Provides assistance in activities of daily living, including basic hygiene, mobility, and nutritional intake.
• Collects patient specimens and data, such as vital signs, input/output, and other delegated measurements.
• Documents objective data and routine aspects of patient care in medical records.
• Assists in the transportation of patient specimens and ensures accurate communication of patient status to other caregivers.
• Recognizes and reports abnormalities or changes in patient health status to licensed professionals.
• Performs procedures and uses equipment as delegated, including blood draws, foley catheter removal, EKGs, and EKG monitoring.
• Provides supplies, support, and assistance for unit-specific procedures under direct supervision.
• Performs receptionist/clerical duties to support unit efficiency and communication flow.
• Participates in resolving customer problems and follows through to appropriate personnel.
• Maintains complete patient records, including admission, transfer, discharge information, and consent forms.
• Ensures all reports and forms are scanned or filed into patient records and maintains accessibility of charting forms.
• Manages and orders office, dietary, and medical supplies, reconciling orders upon delivery.
• Monitors and tracks electronic equipment, ensuring all items are accounted for and in working order.
• May assist with transporting patients, including pre-operative and post-operative patients to critical care units.
• Participates in OR room turnover as needed.

Schedule

• Full-time: 3 days, 12-hour shifts (6:00am - 6:30pm).
• Part-time: 2 days, 12-hour shifts (6:00am - 6:30pm).
• Weekend rotations required.
• Holiday rotation required.
• Flat rate $1/hour weekend shift differential.
• 18% night shift differential when applicable.

Requirements

• High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
• Current BLS certification.
• Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in state of practice (required for new hires and transfers).
• 1 year of medical clerical experience, preferably in a hospital or physician office setting, or prior customer service experience.
• Excellent organizational, human relations, and communication skills.
• Working knowledge of medical terminology and computer literacy/keyboarding skills.
• Depending on department assignment, minimum passing score of 85% on ECG or EEG test with accurate identification of lethal cardiac dysrhythmias and epileptiform activity.
• Successful completion of a unit-approved basic electrocardiogram interpretation course, electroencephalographic interpretation course, or on-the-job training.
• For positions in behavioral health settings serving children: Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card required at hire and maintained throughout employment; Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.
• For Banner Home Care AZ positions: Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card required at hire and maintained throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) licensure in Arizona.
• Recent healthcare experience.
• Successful completion of an approved unit secretary program.
